I made it from real aloe vera leaves, however I find it a little watery. Is there something we can add to thicken it? Thanks

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

I would try adding in a little of the aloe vera gel. That is typically pretty thick and should help. I’m not sure if xanthum gum would work in this recipe as a thickening agent or not.

      • Margaret on

Yes, xanthum gum would work. Might be a bit slimy feeling in comparison to commercial hand sanitizer. Just be sure to use a high speed immersion blender or such to hydrate the xanthan gum well.

Tea tree oil is very overpowering to the senses…is there a substitute? I have plenty of aloe vera plants! Great idea! I’m interested in organic essential oils, as well. Thanks! :)

I appreciate all your great content! Thanks for all the great info you share. I’m wondering about the anti-bacterial properties of some of the essential oils, like tea tree, “thieves” type oils, etc… Do they kill the good bacteria as well? I definitely prefer not using commercial hand sanitizers with chemicals, but still worry about killing the good bacteria when I’m trying to kill the bad! I can’t seem to find any information about this.

FYI…link to Aloe Vera Gel leads to Aloe Vera juice. I ordered it and didn’t notice, but started to make it and it was very liquidly…then noticed. Ordering gel now…looking forward to making this. Now looking for something to make with juice:)

I wanted to ask about the aloe vera gel you recommend. It has carageenan in it and I thought that was a cancer causing ingredient? Just curious. Thank you!

can you use plastic containers when using oils or plastic is ok? Thought using oils with plastic would not be ideal?? Curious..
