Lavender and Rosemary Homemade Hair Detangler

Homemade hair detangler - Dr. Axe

I have heard some pretty tough stories from moms who struggle to keep their daughter’s hair tangle-free. Kicking, screaming and lots of tears have been shed in an effort to maintain that beautiful long hair. And it seems it does not end at childhood! This is a common problem for adults, too, especially swimmers.

The best homemade conditioners and leave-in conditioner sprays work great — unlike those toxic commercial detanglers — and can definitely be used to help keep tangles out of the hair, but a detangler spray can be even more helpful. Detangling the hair helps keep it healthy since a knot could result in some pretty serious breakage. It isn’t hard to do and if you want to know how to detangle hair, this homemade hair detangler recipe is so easy, for you make it right at home with just a few ingredients.

Try this detangler recipe to help make combing and brushing the hair easier on both mom and daughter!

Start by pulling together all of the ingredients, glass bottle and funnel. Grab the glass bottle, and place the 6–8 drops of lavender oil inside. Lavender essential oil is a favorite of mine. It smells great and offers softening and conditioning treatment to the hair. Then, add the rosemary. Packed with antioxidants, rosemary essential oil stimulates new hair growth and helps with damaged hair. It can also treat dandruff and itchy scalp.

Next, using your funnel, add the apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is definitely a wonder ingredient for you hair! Apple cider vinegar works by through the acidity it contains. This acidity helps prevent the loss of much-needed natural oils in the hair and scalp by keeping pH levels balanced. I love Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother. Just make sure it’s organic and contains ‘the Mother,’ which is chock-full of healthy probiotics!

Now, let’s add the water. Using purified or distilled water is important so that we do not contaminate the homemade hair detangler recipe. This helps it to last longer by eliminating the possibility of the formation of bacteria.

Cap the bottle and give it a good shake! After you wash you hair, you can spray the detangler throughout your hair and no need to wash it out either; it acts as a leave-in condition, too! You can also spot spray any newly risen knots or tangles that you may find.

I replaced the water with aloe juice and my hair loves this recipe! Try the dandruff shampoo on here as well and leave it sit on your hair for a few minutes before washing then follow up with the detangler, wonderful!

    Dr Axe,
I love concept however this did not help with tangles. I have thick, course long hair. This did nothing to help tangles and knots. Any other suggestions?

I haven’t tried this recipe, but I have used ACV in my hair as a conditioner. It smells string at first but dissipates as it dries.

Simply made this for my hair. I have wavy hair (very dry and tangled – because of a multi month remain in New Jersey – we didn’t understand we needed to utilize a water conditioner.). Anyway, so my hair isn’t actually sensible. I simply connected it and delicately brushed my hair and it feels greatly improved than expected. The tangles leave all the more effectively. So I figure it would work for individuals with “ordinary” hair.

Hello Dr! I have an extremely dull thin dry frizzy breakage prone hair! Suggest me a diy shampoo(which will work after oiling my hair) and conditioner and a hair tonic that I can leave in for a good growth!

Do you have a recipe for mouth wash. I am using the coconut-baking soda tooth paste recipe but it
leaves my mouth tasting quite salty. I would like to use a mouth wash afterwards

I just made this for my hair. I have got curly hair (extremely dry and tangled – due to a six month stay in New Jersey – we didn’t realise we had to use a water softener). Anyway, so my hair isn’t exactly manageable. I just applied it and gently brushed my hair and it feels much better than usual. The tangles leave more easily. So I think it would definitely work for people with “normal” hair.

I have heard lavender is good for problems with lice. Will this spray keep lice from making a home in children’s hair?

Lavender is great! Add 5-6 drops of tea tree and peppermint. My son’s class had a major lice problem, and he was one of the few to escape the little guys!

On April 30th I placed two orders. I have not received either one. I’ve sent a number of emails requesting information on when I can expect the packages and received automated replies that you’re really busy and it’ll take a while to research and get back to me. I’m going to contact my credit card and cancel both orders if I don’t hear from someone very soon!

I love Dr Axe products bur the customer service is terrible. The only way to contact is via emai and if you write something on their FB they don’t like it doesn’t get published. I’m looking into other companies for the products I use.
