Gut-healing smoothie - Dr. Axe

Leaky gut is tied to a range of health conditions, from food sensitivities and irritable bowel syndrome to autoimmune diseases and inflammatory skin conditions like acne. It’s why I recommend transitioning to a healing foods diet and transforming your health from the inside out.

This Gut-Healing Smoothie is one of my favorite recipes to soothe the gut and demonstrate just how easy and delicious healthy eating can be. All the wholesome ingredients work together to make a creamy drink that’ll satisfy your taste buds while soothing your gut and it couldn’t be more simple to make.

Gut-healing smoothie ingredients - Dr. Axe

Throw all your ingredients in a blender and blend on high until the gut-healing smoothie is nice and smooth, about 2 minutes. Serve over ice and enjoy.

Because this drink is effortless, you might underestimate how powerful and good for your gut it is. That’s a mistake! This one gut-healing smoothie is brimming with more nutrients than your average meal. The benefit-rich avocado gives it a creamy texture while boosting your healthy fat intake. A mix of honey and ripe bananas make this naturally sweet. And several cups of my favorite leafy greens, kale and spinach, add heaps of vitamins, especially vitamins K and A.

If you’re worried that a mix of fruits and veggies won’t keep you full, chia seeds have come to the rescue. They’re packed with fiber, ensuring you feel full for longer. Along with a scoop of protein powder, this smoothie will tide you over for hours.

I have just begun making organic Rotisserie Chicken Bone Broth & veggies in a slow cooker for 24 hours. A friend recommends cooking an organic chicken in a pressure cooker for 4 or so hours to receive the same nutritive broth with the same release of collagen, aminos and minerals? Is this true? How is the best way to make homemade organic bone broth?

Is juicing ok to heal a leaky gut? I thought steamed veggies were better than raw. (Such as cabbage)I thought I should avoid sweet fruit and honey also. I have a stressed gut type. Please clarify. Thanks.

You can refrigerate this smoothie for about two days, but I personally think the taste is better when made fresh. I would recommend cutting the recipe in half to avoid keeping it in the fridge for too long.

Overnite I woke up with Guttate Psoriasis. I’ve been treated from a
My Vascular doctor for Venus Stasis Ulcers. Last year I had a open wound which did heal and I’m not diabetic. My legs are ugly red and scaly most of the time. I moisturize but it’s winter and my house is extremely dry. At first I thought I had an insect bite or a reaction to something. I eat fresh most of the time. Carbs get in the way especially that I am a cook and baker. My age is 71. I’m extremely active and still work in a school. I feel my legs are weakening and recently bought a cane. My Dermotologist gave me the news of Guttate Psoriasis. It’s above my knees down my arms and the top of my back. His prescriptions were an Antibiotic Cefadroxil 500 mg twice daily and a Steroid cream Clobetasol Propionate USP cream 45 grams 0.05%. extremely itchy. I stay away from fragrance creams. Praying this all goes away. To my observation I think I have a Leaky gut.

Hi Dr Axe, in your webinar 2 days ago, you said that eating raw vegetables was very bad for leaky gut. And that we should only consume cooked vegetables.

So why use raw leafy greens in your smoothies?

Which theory is correct please ? I’m very confused as to whether to have green smoothies with raw vegetables, or not. Many thanks , Diana

Essential oils are amazing and I use them all the time, but someone on here mentioned to possibly use them in ear. Don’t ever put them in your ears or eyes. You can place drops on a cotton ball and place the cotton ball in ear and they will get it just the same. Also you can rub them on the bone behind the ear and they get in that way as well. You can rub oils around the eye and underneath if you need to ever use them for that. Just wanted to let you know.

Ask your pharmacist what that is. I believe it is a synthetic thyroid med. His blood panel probably came up low for Thyroid. If he gets heart palpatations from that med there is a natural alternative called Armour. I have found it works very well – it’s just ground up pig thyroid. I recently began taking a Thyroid support vitamin which has corrected my Thyroid embalance. Which I’m scheduled for a lab test on my thyroid levels in 5 weeks to monitor how well my thyroid balance is doing. I stopped my Thyroid Meds & am just taking the Thyroid support instead. I believe Dr Axe makes one.

In my opinion, healing smoothies are for those that already have completed beginning phase of GAPS diet. Try sipping bone broth for a few days, give your body a rest. Slowly add back in your normal foods you can tolerate. Dr. Axe has a ton of information on this site. It has helped me, and also my mother-in-law who has struggled her whole life with gut problems. This particular recipe is truly for maintenance, not those beginning to heal their gut. Greens are added later and I agree they are a must at every meal. I eat them way more than anything else, but you must begin to heal your gut first. Check out Dr. Axe’s crock pot recipe for bone broth. Store in mason jars and freeze for soups. By the way, I only use greens in powder form , like Dr. Axe sells, in my smoothies. I feel I do so much better that way than using Kale or Spinach raw. Hope this helps.

    • Stacy on

      Hi Beverly,

I understand what you are going through. Please do not add raw greens into smoothies. With IBS and Celiac disease I would make a bone broth and sip on it during the day, even for breakfast, it is that healing. You will notice a difference. Do not eat any raw greens during this time, just take it easy and only eat boiled greens like broccoli. Give your tummy a break, and slowly add raw greens, like in a salad, only after you feel you can tolerate it. I’m guessing you have been struggling with raw greens, like salads, for awhile. My mother-in-law could not eat salad for YEARS, now at 80 years old she can. Also, if you do eat bananas make sure they are very ripe with brown spots as they are much easier to digest. Hope this helps you, I really feel for you. I know how frustrating your illness is and many people don’t understand. Take Care.

Also, if you eat meat make sure and boil it only. Do not grill it or bake in the oven. It is easier on your stomach and do this in the beginning phases of healing your gut. This along with bone broth and boiling veggies is very healing. Make sure your meat is grass-fed only. I make a lot of soups and it is incredibly healing. I personally do not eat red meat, but if you do it needs to be boiled not baked. Later on when your gut can tolerate it you can grill and bake it. Same with chicken, and even fish for some people. Hope this helps.

I don’t see how this would be gut healing………many people don’t tolerate coconut water or milk well or bananas for that matter and mixing fruit and veggies creates SO MUCH bloating and gas……..how is that healing……..and drinking kale juice exacerbated my hypothyroid issues…
and mixing protein with fruit also causes bloating and gas.??????? I don’t get it……

Try a swig of organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar. You may need to balance your Hydrochloric Acid content in your stomach. It may be it’s not breaking your food down properly!!! Which may cause gas & bloating! Especially after 40 when you stop producing enough enzymes to break down your foods. Trader Joes carries a Sublingual B you dissolve under the tongue. deborah R-if one has gut issues then yes it will cause problems like gas, bloating, but if you have decent digestion going on then it will generally help soothe the stomach lining, everyone is different, some have leaky gut and or SIBO, and need a very special health protocol as taking probiotics will have you feeling worse as there is too much bacterial overgrowth.

      Do you eat iodized salt.
You may need iodine to help the thyroid.
Many years ago a law was passed to put iodine in salt because people had no other source for it.
You can get iodine as a liquid. Definitely work with a Homeopathic Doctor to establish right amount to take.

      Reply
      • asa on

Bernard Jensen has a wonderful ‘Liquid Dulse’ . half a teaspoon twice daily. Also black walnut is high in iodine. Dr Christopher & Dr Hulda Clark are excellent brands of Black Walnut extract. One can take 1 tspn or more of the black walnut 3 times daily. And apply as a compress to the throat, where the body will absorb the organic iodine directly . Plus, learn a relaxtion technique. High emotional upsets leads to increase buring up of the iodine in the body which in turn causes thyroid problems. Solution: iodine rich foods, daily relaxation & learning to “accept whatever decision is made & go along with Life peacefully”

  25. Nell on

Kale is the most herbicide ridden vegetable so organic kale is a must when using concentrated amounts….and in the past three months, our clinic has seen 5 cases of individuals with pre-existing hypothyroid conditions, worsen while using green drinks that are primarily kale or a mix of kale and spinach. I could include an article I’ve written on the subject but it’s too lengthy for this platform.Kale should should be blanched not drunk or eaten raw. Lots of info to support this…Sorry just because it’s green doesn’t always mean it’s the recommended thing to do…there is the chemistry of the body and how it works and then there’s the shiny new band wagon of pied pipers and good intentions that just end up being ‘trends’.

I would guess those having trouble with greens are also in need of iodine.

Because I am casein allergic, I really need to look for great products that are milk free. One that I have found that I think is really good is the Garden of Life Raw meal. It is a powder for shakes/smoothies. I have the chocolate. It is non GMO, organic, raw, vegan, gluten free, dairy free, soy free, it does contain coconut. But do a search for it and check out the label! Loaded with raw sprouted foods and raw probiotics and enzymes. You can use one scoop for a snack or two for a meal. Dr Axe, I am no expert, and would love your opinion on this product as well as any other fabulous ones for non milk people. And….and, this is the best part….Add this to almond milk or (your choice) and drop in one or two small drops of peppermint essential oil and it just perfects it!

You would b surprised! There are substitutes for some of those things. Within days his bleeding stopped and the pain on elimination went away! Gone! You can’t just do one or two things…it takes many things to get well. Our bodies are like a machine! We need to keep it uned up” with many foods and therapies. its the cruciferea family of vegetables that inhibit the absorption of iodine & thereby irritate the thyroid. kale, cabbage & others. Spinach is Not a member of cruciferea. Best to use as much Variety as possible in shakes (& foods)..whatever is in season is least likely to be ‘chemically manipulated’..& is more likely to be grown locally & therefore fresh. As well as economical. One needs elements from the fruits vegetables, seeds, nuts & grain from all 4 seasons in order to build a healthy strong body

There is a hotel you can stay at this side of the border and the van will take you across in the morning. You do need a paasport as they are out of the country. I go there for breast cancer and it is almost gone, naturally. Medical wanted me to do standard care, chemo/radiation but i went there instead and sm so happy i did. To answer your question, their tonic should be able to help you as it is a detox among so many other healthy things. They dont just handle cancer but ms, and other things. You can call and talk to a doctor between 8:15-8:30am pacific standard time. Remember to always “fast” which is no eating anything, even meds (if possible) by 8:00 pm the night before. There is a small cafe on site and they will tell you, after checking all your tests, when you can eat. Take cash as well since some pharmacies, taxies only except cash. The clinic accepts checks from the u.s., and credit cards. The hotel can set up a pick up at the san diego airport back to the hotel. Hope this helps To your health!

I once read that if you shower twice a day for 2 weeks and eat beef and stewed tomatoes once a day, it will curb your cigarette addition. The beef and stewed tomatoes draw the nicotine out of your cells. The showers wash the nicotine off your skin. I’m not a smoker, but I’m around a lot of smokers. It’s best to make your own nut milks as most store-bought contain MANY unwanted ingredients besides carrageenan. They also include various gums, refined sugar, and natural flavor. Caraggeenan is not only used as an emulsifier (thickening agent), but because it has been so highly processed, it’s like poison ivy on the intestines—creating all sorts of digestive issues, refined sugar (which is found in MOST processed foods/drinks) is a huge no no as it creates acidity in the body, which is why it’s a cancer feeder (or exacerbates any health issue one may have—from minor to serious), natural favors is an alias of MSG (an excitotoxin. Excitotoxins overstimulate brain cells to death. There are over 90 diff. MSG aliases today hidden under diff. names—another reason to know how to read labels or simply stay away from most processed foods). Making your own nut milks is super easy peasy—that way you know exactly what’s in it. Just google homemade nut milk and you’ll find a plethora of recipes. I make many nut milks (a staple in our house). I mostly make walnut, coconut, almond, pecan, and cashew. But, have also made Brazil nut, hemp seed, and pumpkin seed. :)

Another use of Coconut oil. I wear hearing aids and they cause my ears to itch. I mixed some coconut oil and tree tea oil and swab my ears out with that. It has killed the fungus and stopped the itch.

Thank you for sharing this. My little girl wears hearing aids as well. I have her tub the coconut oil but now will add the essential oil. Thanks

I’ve heard essential oils can damage plastic. Maybe put oil, highly diluted in coconut oil, in/on her ear, let it absorb a bit, and then put the aid in.

Where do I buy bee pollen and what are the benefits of it?

Also I have a rare auto-immune disorder (juvenile dermatomyositis) that is in remission. Would following the gut-healing recipes help? I love pastas, breads, rice, etc and have read how bad they are

I think Dr. Axe will tell you to stop eating all that stuff it’s really bad for the fit. Most diseases come from damage in our digestive system so healing the gut is key to better health. I drink a shake that is so pure and good and clean that has helped me recover gut health and this shake here looks really good too.

      Hi Victoria,

You can contact a local beekeeper to see if they sell it. Or purchase from your local health food store. I like fresh vs freeze-died so I use raw bee pollen from a Vermont beekeeper. I don’t know if we can share website link but If you Google Heavenly Honey Apiary in Vermont it is should show up.

Bee pollen and raw honey are loaded with vitamins, minerals and enzymes. They bare immune system boosting powerhouses. You can purchase bee pollen from Sticky Situations in Mystic, CT. I’ll include a link to the website and fb page.
      Good luck !

      Hi, Victoria:
If the rheumatologists gave you steroids for your dermatomyositis and you’re still on them, consider weaning off–under doctor’s supervision. Steroids are the rheuma-doc’s answer to everything, but they suppress the immune system and should rarely ever be used long-term. My husband was diagnosed with dermatomyositis close to 2 years ago and the real problem was mal-absorption. He was not able to eat well due to stomach pain and not absorbing the little nutrition he was eating, causing muscle-wasting. Your cause may be different than his, but since the immune system begins in the gut, many auto-immune problems begin there also, and dermatomyositis is one of them.
You MUST resist the carbo cravings. You likely have candida–a yeast overgrowth, and it is the candida that is craving the simple carbs. The shake on this page is good; eventually you’d want to eliminate the honey and even the banana and if you need it sweeter, try a little stevia. Sugar and simple carbs (which turn to sugar) are the food of all infections: bacterial, viral, and fungal. When you get a craving, tell yourself that it is the bugs craving it–not you! You also likely have inflammation in your gut. Gluten, sugar, and dairy are prime contributors to inflammation; cut back and work towards eliminating them, and your health will improve. Try to make smarter choices: gluten-free bread over regular bread while reducing bread in your diet overall; unsweetened coconut milk or almond milk with, and eventually in lieu of, cow’s milk, or try goat’s milk and goat/sheep’s cheese; choose sweet potato instead of white potato; choose brown /wild rice and quinoa over white rice; if you like yogurt, choose organic (some are high in sugar) or Chobani, and try coconut milk and almond milk yogurts; etc. Really really really try to avoid anything with sugar. And yes, make and drink a smoothie a day. Make up your own. Throw a bunch of spinach, unsweetened coconut milk yogurt, banana, maybe some fruit like raspberries; maybe some protein powder, stevia if it needs to be sweeter, and maybe a drop or two of vanilla or a dash of cinnamon.
A year ago I thought my husband was near death, and if standard medicine had anything to do with it, he would be. But I got him to a naturapathic doc, and tho hubbie does NOT follow all the advice given him (he still craves sugar), he is functional and there is hope. You are young; fix your body now! Don’t wait–it will only get worse for you.
