Brooke Thomas Shares 23-Year Cancer Journey on Dr. Josh Axe Show

Dr. Axe's guest describes being told her melanoma would return by 40, and the faith-centered path she credits for her recovery.

Brooke Thomas told Dr. Josh Axe on his show, in an episode released October 29, 2026, that she was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma at age 26 while pregnant with her first child, and that doctors told her the cancer would likely return before she turned 40.

She told Dr. Axe she was 26 and in her first trimester of pregnancy when a routine checkup turned into a stage 3 melanoma diagnosis. She said doctors warned that without immediate chemotherapy and termination of the pregnancy, she or the baby could die, so she chose surgery without anesthesia to remove the tumor, resulting in roughly 50 stitches. She said a doctor told her that choosing this path meant she would most likely not live past 40 and that the cancer would return.

Thomas said she carried a healthy pregnancy to term, continued blood work every three months for a decade at her doctors' direction, and spent the following two years studying nutrition and what she called holistic living. She described cutting refined sugar and refined flour, eating high protein, good fats, vegetables and fruit, and anchoring her mornings in prayer and Scripture. She said a more recent basal cell carcinoma resolved using practices from a faith-based healing book and a daily prayer lasting roughly eight minutes. She is now 49, married 23 years, with two daughters ages 18 and 21.

Chronic stress raises cortisol, a hormone that can throw off insulin, estrogen, testosterone and thyroid function when it stays elevated, a general physiological relationship Dr. Axe referenced in the conversation. Thomas's account centers on diet changes and a faith-based mindset practice she credits for her recovery, not a treatment tested against melanoma in a clinical setting.

We can grieve and give ourselves permission to grieve and at the same time have hope that we know that God's gonna work it out.

Dr. Axe’s Take

Brooke's refusal to let a prognosis define her is what stands out to me first. Cutting refined sugar and flour and building meals around protein, healthy fats and vegetables is exactly the direction I'd point anyone managing their health, and starting the day with prayer and Scripture before a phone screen is a habit I'd encourage any stressed person to try this week. Anyone facing a diagnosis should keep working with their oncology team while also addressing nutrition, stress and faith.
