How the Dr. Axe Score works

Scores are editorial assessments based on certification records and published lab tests, not our own lab testing. Here’s what goes into them.

Scored on what matters for your health

Each category has its own score, weighted toward what it means for your health: fluoride and PFAS for water, fire barriers and verified certifications for mattresses, measured output for red light.

Checked against the record

Certifications are matched to the certifier’s own database, “FDA cleared” claims to FDA’s records and label claims to independent tests. A claim we can’t verify doesn’t earn credit.

Every figure is sourced

1,427 linked sources across the 14 rankings, each shown beside the number it supports.

Brands can’t pay for placement

Products are scored before any affiliate terms are discussed, and we recommend products whether or not they have an affiliate program.

What is the Dr. Axe Score?
Each Healthy Home ranking uses its own named score, such as the Clean Water Score for water filters or the Clean Sleep Score for mattresses. It runs from 0 to 10 and weights the factors that matter most for your health in that category. It’s an editorial assessment, not a universal safety grade, so compare scores within a category, not across categories.
Do you test the products yourselves?
No. Scores are built from certification records, government filings such as FDA 510(k) clearances and drug labels, and published lab tests from independent testers and from the brands themselves. Every figure links to its source in the full ranking.
Can brands pay for a better score?
No. We may earn a commission when you buy through links on these pages. It never changes our rankings: products are scored before any affiliate terms are discussed, brands can’t pay for placement, and we recommend products whether or not they have an affiliate program.
How often are the rankings updated?
Each ranking shows when its prices and certifications were last checked and keeps a dated change log. The current rankings were checked Sept. 25–27, 2026, and new rankings go live every week.
Which water filter removes fluoride?
Our #1 water filter is the AquaTru Carafe with Alkaline Mineral Boost (8.8/10). It’s certified to remove 96.4% of fluoride and 99% of PFOA/PFOS, collects your water in glass and adds minerals back. Brita, PUR, Aquasana Claryum and Rorra won’t remove fluoride. See the full water filter ranking.
What is the best non-toxic cookware?
Bare cast iron tops our ranking. The Smithey No. 12 Cast Iron Skillet scores 8.8/10, with no lead or cadmium found on its cooking surface. We skip PTFE (“Teflon”) nonstick, even when it says PFOA-free. See the full cookware ranking.
What is the best non-toxic mattress?

Are red light therapy devices as strong as they claim?
