The Best Non-Toxic Air Fryers of 2026, Ranked by What Touches Your Food
We checked 20 air fryers and air fryer ovens on what your food touches, what lines the hot chamber, what each brand admits in its state PFAS filing, how it cooks for independent testers, and its recall record.
Best overall:Our Place Wonder Oven ($185, 8.6/10): food cooks on chromed steel in a stainless box, and its state filing lists no PFAS. Skip the coated bake pan.

The Dr. Axe Clean Cookware Score (0–10) is our editorial judgment, not a lab or safety grade. As on our non-toxic cookware ranking, a PTFE cooking surface caps a score at 5.0 and a ceramic one at 7.0; coated pans you can leave out cost half a point instead.

What air frying changes, and what it doesn't
An air fryer is a small convection oven[1], and about two in three U.S. homes had one by 2024[88]. Compared with deep frying it usually cuts fat and some heat-formed compounds. What the food sits on is a separate question.
Coated basketUsually aluminum with PTFE or ceramic nonstick[4][43].
in air-fried vs deep-fried potatoes in one study; 163 vs 1,385 ng/g in another. Two found air-fried fries higher (one not significantly). A 10-minute soak lowered it with every method (significantly only in deep frying).
heterocyclic amines in chicken air-fried at 392°F vs 320°F; a turmeric marinade cut them 69.4% in beef. Sardines' cholesterol oxidation products rose from 61.2 to 283 µg/g.
is the top setting on many baskets (Breville's oven: 480°F); PTFE starts to break down above about 500°F. At a 392°F setting, 10 air fryers ran 5 to 70°F cooler than set.
Three essentials, plus a fourth for air and cleanup.
1Essential
Pick glass or steel, then check the filing
Glass or bare steel has no coating to wear; in an oven, skip the included coated pan. For nonstick, choose ceramic and confirm the brand's AB 1200 filing lists no PTFE for your model or SKU[48][17]. Skip anything sold only as “PFOA-free”[11].
Do the maker's test run once, window open and pet birds out of the house[86]; Cosori's Pro LE heats the empty basket to 450°F[47]. After that, don't preheat an empty coated basket beyond the manual. Heat new silicone liners once before use[94].
Answer four questions. If nothing fits, we'll say so.

2How many do you cook for?
3Budget?

Our Place Wonder Oven (12 L)
Countertop oven · 12 L · stainless interior · chromed-steel basket and rack · optional ceramic bake pan · 200–450°F
The highest score on our list: nothing you air-fry on is coated, and unlike our #2, neither are the oven walls. Food cooks in a chromed-steel basket or on a chromed-steel rack inside a stainless steel interior, and Our Place says there's “no plastic on any surfaces touching food”[35]. Our Place's California filing covers every Wonder Oven and lists only metals, no PFAS[36]. The one coated piece is the included bake pan, aluminum with a ceramic nonstick coating, which costs half a point on disclosure: skip the included coated bake pan; use the steel basket or rack, or your own glass or stainless dish[35]. America's Test Kitchen gave it 2 of 3 for performance: it did “a decent job of air frying, roasting chicken, and toasting,” with browning slightly less even than higher-ranked ovens, but called it “a pain to use,” with a stiff, ticking timer dial and room for about three slices of toast; it recommended it with reservations[2]. It edges out the larger Wonder Oven Pro (8.5) because ATK rated its cooking higher.

Coated walls[30]“non-stick coating” inside; type not named
The best cook of anything we scored, with an uncoated basket. America's Test Kitchen named it its top air fryer toaster oven: it “consistently made the best food in the bunch,” with air-fryer fries and chicken Parmesan “on par” with its favorite basket air fryer, and it notes the air-fry basket “is made from uncoated metal”[2]. Breville's California disclosure for the BOV900 and its mesh baskets lists only stainless-steel metals, no PTFE[33]. Two things hold it below #1. The oven's inside walls “feature a non-stick coating” Breville doesn't name, which costs it on heat path[30]. And the included 13-inch pizza pan is sold by Breville as a “Non-Stick Pizza Pan” without naming the coating[31]: Mamavation's current list says the BOV900's pizza pans are PTFE[7], while Breville's customer support says the oven is free of PTFE and PFOA[32]. We can't settle that, so it costs half a point: skip the included coated pizza pan; use the stainless basket or rack, or the enamel roasting pan. Before first use, Breville says to run it empty for 20 minutes in a ventilated room because “the oven may emit vapors”[30].

The only basket-style pick with no coating on anything you cook on, and the hardest to handle. Food cooks in a glass bowl with 304 (18/8) stainless accessories, and Fritaire says no food-contact surface has a nonstick coating[22]. But there's a plastic part inside the bowl: a black rotisserie shaft socket made of PPS (polyphenylene sulfide), which Fritaire says is rated to 500°F and counts among the parts that touch food; we score that under heat path[22][24]. America's Test Kitchen gave its cooking 2 of 3 but its safety 1 of 3: the heating element is in a heavy lid you lift off and set on a heat-resistant surface, and “the lid itself got quite hot”; ATK called it “difficult and dangerous to use” and didn't recommend it[1]. Fritaire's pages disagree with each other: the bowl is “tempered” glass on one page and “borosilicate” on another, and the warranty page is titled “90-Day” while its text says 60 days[22][23][26]. We found no California AB 1200 filing. Use oven mitts every time you lift the lid.

Recall[69]Cuisinart grill with pizza oven, July 2026
A stainless-interior oven under $250, but thin on details. Cuisinart lists a stainless steel interior and “No intentionally added PFAS,” but doesn't say what the air-fry basket or baking pan are made of[37], so the basket scores as unverified, and its AB 1200 page returned an error when we checked. The included grill/griddle plate is ceramic nonstick, which costs half a point: skip the included coated grill plate; use the basket or rack[37]. It loses a point on safety for Conair's July 2026 recall of a Cuisinart gas grill with a pizza oven, whose glass window can shatter[69]. ATK hasn't tested this model; it rated the older TOA-60 not recommended, which we don't count against the TOA-70[2].

Glass containers, but your food sits on a ceramic-coated plate. The Crispi Pro's heating unit sits over a 6-quart or 2.5-quart glass container, and the food cooks on a crisper plate inside it. Ninja's product page doesn't say what that plate is made of[13][16], but SharkNinja's product experts answered on Best Buy that the Crispi's crisper plates are “aluminum with a nano-ceramic coating,” and Homes & Gardens lists the Crispi Pro's as “Aluminum nano-ceramic coated”[18][19][6]. Those are staff answers and a reviewer's spec, not a filing, but they fit SharkNinja's California disclosure for the Crispi Pro: aluminum and diboron trioxide, no PTFE[17]. A ceramic coating caps it at 7.0. America's Test Kitchen gave its cooking 3 of 3, with “perfectly crispy french fries and chicken cutlets with even browning,” but its safety 2 of 3: the drawer and its small handles “became extremely hot during cooking,” and the glass drawer was “heavy and difficult to use when shaking foods”[1]. SharkNinja also recalled 1.8 million Foodi multi-cookers, which air fry, in 2025 over a pressure-lid burn hazard[68].

The best-documented ceramic basket. Typhur names both layers, an aluminum-alloy basket with a “PFAS-free nonstick ceramic” coating[38]; its California filing lists the Dome basket as aluminum with no PTFE[40]; and it posts a lab report: TÜV Rheinland found every targeted PFAS below its reporting limit in the coating, a silicone part and two plastic parts of the AF03 version[41]. Know the limits: Typhur paid for that test and sent in the samples, and a targeted panel can't detect PTFE itself, which takes a total-fluorine test. Typhur calls it a “Certification Report”; TÜV's report says it “does not entitle to carry any safety mark”[41]. Typhur also sells the AF03 two ways: as the “Dome 1st Gen” on one page and as one of “both Dome 2 versions” on another[39][38], which costs a point on disclosure. ATK's cooking rating (2.5 of 3) and the TÜV report are on the AF03, not the AF05 pictured: fries and cutlets came out well, “if a touch on the dark side,” but nothing taller than 2 inches fits[1].

Ceramic[42]coated basket and crisper plate (Dark Gray page)
The best value here, if you buy by SKU. Cosori sells the Dark Gray TurboBlaze with a “PFAS-free ceramic-coated, nonstick basket and crisper plate”[42], and America's Test Kitchen gave its cooking 2.5 of 3 and rated it highly recommended for “evenly golden chicken cutlets” and crispy fries[1]. The catch is in Cosori's own California disclosure: the same TurboBlaze model numbers appear under SKUs that list no PTFE and under SKUs that list PTFE[48]. On Sept. 28, cosori.com was selling the Dark Gray (…0161A, $89.99 on sale) and Light Gray (…0206A, $129.99), both in the no-PTFE table, and the Cream TurboBlaze Smart (CAF-DC601S-WUSR, …0205Y, $129.99), which Cosori's filing lists with PTFE; the Cream's page says only “nonstick basket”[42][45][44]. The product pages don't explain the split, which costs a point on disclosure. The crisper plate carries four silicone stoppers[43]. Cosori recalled about 2 million older air fryers in 2023 for an overheating wire connection (205 reports, 10 minor burns); the TurboBlaze wasn't one of them[67].

The least expensive ceramic basket from a major brand, with a date to check. SharkNinja's California disclosure lists PTFE for basket air fryers made before Aug. 15, 2024, including the AF140 series, and no PTFE for units made after that date or purchased after Jan. 1, 2025[17]. Those two conditions overlap for older stock sold later, so check the manufacture date on the unit's label, or buy new from sharkninja.com. The AF141's page text says only “nonstick basket and crisper plate,” but a caption on Ninja's own product photo calls it “ceramic-coated”[20][21]. The product page doesn't explain the date split, which costs a point on disclosure, and it loses one on safety for SharkNinja's 2025 recall of 1.8 million Foodi multi-cookers, which air fry[68]. ATK hasn't tested this model.

The biggest ceramic drawer in our top 10, and the only air fryer with a published independent coating test. GreenPan's Thermolon is a silica-based sol-gel coating[55]; here it covers the 7-quart drawer and air fry tray[52], and GreenPan's California disclosure says the Thermolon food-contact surface contains none of the listed chemicals[54]. Australia's CHOICE had an accredited lab screen a “Greenpan Bistro Air Fryer with See Through Lid” crisping tray and found 120 mg/kg of total fluorine, one of seven products above its 100 mg/kg follow-up line[8]. GreenPan's maker said the fluorine could have come from mica in the ceramic topcoat and that its own accredited test found none at a 50 mg/kg reporting limit; in CHOICE's follow-up, every targeted PFAS was below reporting limits except trace PFBA across all seven products, which CHOICE's expert called not concerning[8]. The finding costs a point on disclosure; we couldn't confirm the Australian model matches this U.S. one. The top of the chamber is a 360° see-through window whose material GreenPan doesn't state. GreenPan says to avoid cooking sprays because their propellant damages nonstick[52], and it told Consumer Reports its ceramic coatings are expected to last two to five years[9].

Air fryers have no filters or cartridges, so the price is most of the cost; the one recurring cost is replacing a worn coated basket. We divide today's price by the main container's capacity, and show the regular price where the brand lists a sale. Ovens are listed separately, converted to quarts, because much of an oven's volume isn't usable for air frying.

“Ceramic” here means a sol-gel coating: silica or titania particles in a silicone-based film, cured on metal[55][92]. It's PTFE-free by design, but it's still a coating. Cosori's parts are ceramic on the TurboBlaze page and plain “nonstick” in the Pro LE's manual; SharkNinja names the AF141's coating only in a photo caption, and the Crispi's plate coating only in staff answers on Best Buy[42][47][21][19]. Shaded rows are models outside our top 10.
Heat margins
Maximum temperature vs. where nonstick starts to break down
Air fryers run hotter than most people assume. The hottest basket models we checked top out at 450°F and Breville's oven at 480°F, 50°F and 20°F under the point where PTFE nonstick starts to break down. In the one test we found of real air temperatures, all 10 air fryers set to 392°F ran 5 to 70°F cooler than the dial; at lower settings, two ran up to 14°F hotter. Nobody has measured how hot the basket surface itself gets.

Ceramic coatings aren't PTFE, but they're coatings too: one study found all six aluminum nonstick pans it tested, PTFE and ceramic, degraded when heated past 250°C (482°F) or for long periods[90]. GreenPan says its Thermolon withstands 850°F; that's the maker's claim[52]. Campden's figures are for air temperature in the middle of the basket, not the coating's surface[5]. We found no study of PFAS or fumes released by an air fryer itself.
How we score: the Dr. Axe Clean Cookware Score™
Most air fryer reviews rank on crispness and convenience. Ours starts with what your food touches, then what lines the hot chamber, what the brand discloses in writing, how it cooks for independent testers, and its safety record. It's the same score family as our non-toxic cookware ranking, with the same surface scale and caps. It's an editorial assessment built from maker disclosures, independent tests and public records, not our own lab testing, and not a medical or safety grade. Price isn't part of the score; see the cost chart.
Food-contact surface35%
What your food sits on when you air fry: the basket, rack, tray or plate you cook on, plus the chamber lining where food touches it, scored on the worst of those: glass 10; fully clad nickel-free stainless 9.5; 18/10, 316 or other bare stainless 9; chromed steel 8.5; enamel without a lead-free statement 8; a part whose material the maker won't name 7; sol-gel ceramic or any other non-PTFE nonstick coating 5; PTFE 1. Pans you can leave out (a pizza pan, bake pan or grill plate) are scored under disclosure instead, and plastic parts under heat path.
Heat path & plastics15%
What lines the hot chamber and what else sits in it, whether or not food touches it. Glass bowl or bare stainless or enameled walls 10; chromed or aluminized steel 9; a named non-PTFE coating 6; a coating whose type isn't disclosed 5; PTFE 2. Minus 3 for plastic inside the chamber that touches food, 1 for silicone or rubber parts in the chamber, 1 for a viewing window whose material isn't stated.

Plus 0.5 for a posted maker-paid lab test. Minus 0.5 for each included coated pan you can leave out (1 if it's PTFE); 1 when an independent lab finds elevated total fluorine in a PFAS-free coating; 1.5 for “stainless” in the name of a coated-basket product; 1 when the same model is sold in PTFE and non-PTFE builds and the product page doesn't say which you get; 1 per contradiction on the brand's own pages; 1 for an “FDA-approved” coating claim.
Cooking performance15%
Cooking results only: America's Test Kitchen's cooking rating (air fryers) or performance rating (ovens), out of 3 stars and scaled to 10 (3 stars 10, 2.5 stars 8.3, 2 stars 6.7, 1.5 stars 5), or a Consumer Reports free best pick 10, averaged when both exist; no rating 6. Plus 0.5 for 5 quarts or more (or an oven), minus 0.5 under 4 quarts or with no published maximum temperature.
Safety record15%
Starts at 9. Plus 1 for a UL or ETL listing the maker states. Minus 3 for a recall of this model, 1 for a recall of another of the brand's cooking appliances in the past 3 years. America's Test Kitchen's published safety stars count here and only here: minus 2 for 1 of 3 (or when ATK calls it dangerous), minus 1 for 2 of 3.
Score what you actually cook on. We extend the cookware page's worst-surface rule for appliances that come with several accessories. The surface score and caps come from the parts you air-fry on: the basket, rack, tray or plate used in air-fry mode, plus the chamber lining where food touches it. Pans you can leave out, such as a pizza pan, bake pan or grill plate, don't set the surface score or the cap; each coated one costs 0.5 on disclosure (1 if it's PTFE), and the review tells you to skip it. A part whose material the maker won't name scores 7, the value our cookware page gives a surface it can't verify, unless a worse part is named. If the main cooking surface isn't named anywhere we could check, the product is “Not rated.” Plastic parts inside the chamber are scored under heat path & plastics, not the surface scale.
Two caps, from the cookware page. PTFE (a PFAS) on a surface you air-fry on caps the score at 5.0 and keeps a product out of the top 10. A sol-gel ceramic or any other non-PTFE nonstick coating there caps it at 7.0; a coating whose type the maker won't name counts as non-PTFE only when its state filing or page says it's PFAS- or PTFE-free.
Disclosure is most of the proof we have. Only one independent test of an air fryer coating exists (CHOICE, Sept. 2026): a total-fluorine screen of a GreenPan Bistro tray, which costs that model a point[8]. We found no independent VOC or leaching test of any air fryer. So we lean on California AB 1200 filings, which name intentionally added chemicals of concern by model or SKU[73]. Maker-paid lab reports earn 0.5 and are labeled as maker data. We take points off for a “stainless” name on a coated basket (1.5), for selling one model number in PTFE and non-PTFE builds without saying which you get (1), for contradictions on the brand's own pages (1 each), and for calling a coating “FDA-approved” (1).
ATK counts once in each pillar. Cooking performance uses only America's Test Kitchen's cooking rating (air fryers) or performance rating (ovens), out of 3 stars and scaled to 10, or Consumer Reports' free best-pick list, on the exact model; ratings of a different or older model don't count, and no rating scores a neutral 6. ATK's published safety stars count only under safety: 1 of 3 (or “dangerous”) costs 2, 2 of 3 costs 1. Safety starts at 9 and also uses CPSC recall records[70]: a recall of this model costs 3, and a recall of another of the brand's cooking appliances within 3 years of Sept. 28, 2026 costs 1.
Who's eligible. Air fryers and air fryer ovens you can buy new from the brand today, one model per product line, with no PTFE surface you cook on. Sold-out models are scored but not ranked. Ties at one decimal are broken by the unrounded score, then surface, heat path, disclosure and cooking performance.
One caveat applies to every score: without independent lab tests, a brand that discloses more can look worse than one that says nothing. That's why disclosure is its own pillar, and why an unnamed part never scores as well as a named glass or steel one.
Why we avoid PTFE baskets
PTFE, the coating many people call Teflon, is itself a PFAS, a “forever chemical.” It isn't the only PFAS worry, and it's stable at normal cooking temperatures. But an air fryer is a heating appliance with a coated basket close to the element, there are good PTFE-free options now, and several states have banned it in cookware. That's our dividing line: a PTFE surface you cook on caps a score at 5.0 and keeps a product out of our top 10.
PTFE is a PFAS, and heat is the risk
FDA authorizes PTFE resins for food contact and says negligible amounts migrate into food[81][80]. The problem is heat: coatings start to break down above about 500°F, and scratched ones can release fumes sooner[84]. PTFE surfaces released 4.75 ng of PFAS acids an hour under normal use (below 446°F, 230°C), and empty pans up to 12,190 ng an hour at 698°F (370°C)[89]. A 2024 study that heated 18 coated items to 482°F found no PFAS in 12, including all five frying pans it tested for its target list, but did find PFAS acids from a baking tray and a baking mat[91].
The margin in an air fryer is thin
Many basket air fryers go to 450°F, and makers run the empty basket hot on first use: Cosori's Pro LE test run ends at 450°F[47]. One lab study found nonstick pans degraded beyond 250°C (482°F)[90]. The good news: at a 392°F setting, 10 air fryers ran 5 to 70°F cooler than the dial, though two ran up to 14°F hotter at lower settings[5]. No one has measured the basket surface.
Pet birds are most at risk
Veterinarians report PTFE poisoning in birds “even at recommended temperatures,” and birds can be poisoned in another room[86]; PTFE gas at 536°F (280°C) can kill them outright[85]. We found no documented case from an air fryer.
“Teflon flu” rose in 2023
U.S. poison centers logged 267 suspected cases of polymer fume fever in 2023, the most since 2000, and more than 3,600 in two decades; not all come from home cookware[87]. Symptoms usually pass in a day or two[84]. We found none tied to an air fryer.
Coatings wear out
Dishwashing speeds coating wear, and a scratched or peeling basket should be replaced, a University of Queensland researcher told ABC[113]. With glass or bare steel, there's nothing to wear off.
The law is moving
Maine banned cookware with PFAS in a food-contact surface from Jan. 1, 2026 and names air fryers[71]; Minnesota since 2025[72]; Colorado from 2026[74]; Rhode Island and New Mexico from 2027[75][76]; Connecticut and Vermont from 2028[77][78]. California requires disclosure but vetoed a ban[79][73].
What to do: choose glass or bare steel, or ceramic if you want nonstick, and confirm “no PTFE” in the brand's AB 1200 filing for your exact model or SKU. If you keep a PTFE air fryer, don't heat it empty, keep birds away from the kitchen, and replace the basket when it's scratched.
Is air frying healthier? What the research shows
For fat, yes, clearly. For the compounds that form in hot, dry cooking, it depends on the food, the temperature and the time. All of this is lab food chemistry and air measurement; we found no study of health outcomes in people who air fry. Here's how we'd grade it:
Lower in air-fried potatoes in three lab studies: up to 47% in one, about 90% in another. Two others found air-fried fries higher, though in one the difference wasn't significant. Soaking potatoes 10 minutes and stopping at golden both help.
Air-fried potatoes had 70% less fat, about 45 fewer calories per 100 g, with two air fryers and four oils. Fish held 63 to 65% less oil. In observational studies, people who ate the most fried food had a 28% higher risk of major cardiovascular events than those who ate the least.
Corn oil heated in an air fryer oxidized least, vs an infrared cooker and an oven. Fat in deep-fried potatoes had significantly more polar compounds. A teaspoon of fresh oil beats a reused bath.
HCAs in whole chicken air-fried at 392°F vs 320°F; searing beef first raised them 2.6×; turmeric cut them 69.4%. In 184 air-fried foods, HCAs and PAHs were “unlikely a concern,” acrylamide in grains and vegetables less clearly so.
Cholesterol oxidation products in sardines before and after air frying; parsley and chives slowed it. Lemon juice before air frying took them from 700 to 1,333 µg/g in another study.
Silicone air-fryer molds exceeded Germany's guidance for volatile loss; dibutyl phthalate exceeded its limit in a dry-food test. New silicone baking molds pushed indoor siloxanes past a German precaution value.
Titanium and silica nanoparticles came off ceramic nonstick only under the most aggressive abrasion in a NIST test; acidic, hot simulants released titanium in another.

The counterpoint: a University of Toronto study measured emissions per amount of food and found air-frying chicken wings and breast released 2.1 and 5.4 times the PM10 of pan cooking, and 2.5 to 4.8 times the VOCs for fries and chicken breast[111]. Fatty foods and a greasy machine erase much of the advantage[110].
The practical takeaway matches the setup above: air fry with a little real fat instead of a reused oil bath, don't push the temperature or time past golden, marinate meat, and keep the kitchen ventilated and the machine clean[99][98][104][112]. Acrylamide is classed as a probable human carcinogen, which is why the potato tips matter most[99].
What “PFOA-free” means (and what it doesn't)
“PFOA-free” is the most common non-toxic claim on air fryer boxes, and the least useful one.
“PFOA-free” is old news
PFOA was phased out of U.S. production under an EPA stewardship program[82], and IARC now classes it as carcinogenic[83]. The label says nothing about PTFE: most pans sold as “PFOA-free” in the Ecology Center's tests were PTFE[11]. Kalorik's MAXX Advance oven promises “BPA & PFOA-Free” and doesn't mention PTFE[62].
California's “free of” rule
Under AB 1200, a maker can't claim a cooking surface is free of one PFAS when another is intentionally added, and must post the chemicals online[73][10]. Those filings are how we found Instant's PTFE and Cosori's two builds[60][48].
PTFE-free vs. PFAS-free
“PFAS-free” is the claim to look for; PTFE is one PFAS. Ceramic coatings were PFAS-free in the Ecology Center's pan tests[11], but “ceramic” isn't a regulated word, so check the filing.
“FDA-approved”?
Dash says its ceramic coating is “FDA-approved to be food-safe”[56]. FDA's food-contact rules authorize substances for specific uses, such as the PTFE resins in 21 CFR 177.1550[81][80]; Dash doesn't say which authorization it means, so the phrase costs it a point.
How to read an air fryer's specs
California's AB 1200 filings are the most useful document most shoppers never read[73]. SCHOTT rates its borosilicate glass to 842°F (450°C) for long use, far above any air fryer[65]; tempered soda-lime glass took over U.S. bakeware years ago and has a record of shattering reports[12]. Instant's and Chefman's pages state an ETL or UL listing[59][50].

Best glass air fryers
Glass keeps coatings off the bowl or container, but check what the food sits on. Only Fritaire cooks on glass and bare steel; in the Crispi, food sits on a crisper plate that SharkNinja's staff describe as aluminum with a nano-ceramic coating[19]. Glass is heavy and gets very hot[1]. Ninja's Canadian page calls the Crispi's glassware borosilicate[15]; the U.S. pages we read don't name the glass type.
Ninja Crispi 4-in-1 Portable Glass Air Fryer (FN101GY)$152.99 (sale)
The same design as the Crispi Pro, with 4-qt and 6-cup glass containers, 1,500 W and 450°F, on sale for $152.99[14]. SharkNinja's staff say its crisper plates are aluminum with a nano-ceramic coating[18]; its filing lists no PTFE for the Crispi (FN10X)[17]. ATK hasn't tested this model.

Best air fryer ovens with a stainless or steel interior
Countertop ovens are the only air fryers we found with uncoated metal baskets, and Consumer Reports notes a toaster oven “likely contains less plastic than an air fryer”[4]. Most include one coated pan; skip the included coated pan and use the stainless or steel basket or rack.
The larger 28-L Wonder Oven: stainless interior, steel basket, racks and crumb tray, and “no plastic on any surfaces touching food”; skip the included coated bake pan and use the basket or racks[34]. Covered by Our Place's filing, no PFAS[36]. It scores 8.5, just under the original, because ATK rated its cooking 1.5 of 3 (roast chicken splattered and smoked)[2].

What about Fritaire, Instant and Cosori?
Three of the most-searched names in air fryers, plus Ninja. Here's what their own filings, independent testers and recall records show.
Fritaire (#3, 7.3)Fritaire sells itself as “The First-Ever Non-Toxic Glass Air Fryer,” and it does keep coatings off the food: a glass bowl and 304 stainless accessories[22]. That's why it ranks #3. Three things keep it lower. There's a plastic PPS socket inside the bowl[24]. America's Test Kitchen rated its safety 1 of 3 and called it “difficult and dangerous to use” because the heater sits in a hot lid you lift off by hand[1]. And its own pages disagree on the glass (tempered or borosilicate) and on the warranty (60 or 90 days)[23][26]. It's the only “Best” air fryer on Mamavation's widely shared list, which is based on company disclosures, not lab tests, and which carries a 15% Fritaire discount code[7].
Instant (5.0, capped)Instant makes America's Test Kitchen's winning air fryer and its upgrade pick, and the stainless ClearCook model is on Consumer Reports' free list and states an ETL listing[1][3][59]. They cook well. But Instant's own California filing lists the 6-quart ClearCook with OdorErase, and most Vortex models, under “Models containing PTFE coated cooking surface,” with the chemical given as PFAS, and lists bisphenol A and phthalates for model groups that include the ClearCook without naming the part[60]. The “Stainless Steel” in the product's name describes the outside[59].
Cosori (#7 TurboBlaze, 6.8)Cosori's Dark Gray TurboBlaze page promises a “PFAS-free ceramic-coated” basket, and its filing lists that SKU without PTFE[42][48]. But the same filing lists the same TurboBlaze and Pro LE model numbers under other SKUs with PTFE, and on Sept. 28 cosori.com was selling one of them: the Cream TurboBlaze Smart, SKU …0205Y, whose page says only “nonstick basket”[44]. None of the product pages explains the split, so buy by SKU. Its Iconic model is sold as “The Stainless Steel” air fryer with a ceramic-coated stainless basket[49]. In 2023 Cosori recalled about 2 million air fryers sold from 2018 to 2022 because a wire connection could overheat (205 reports, 10 minor burns); none of the models we scored were included[67].
Ninja (#5 Crispi Pro, 7.0)SharkNinja's filing is one of the clearest we read: basket air fryers made before Aug. 15, 2024, including the AD150 and AD300CO, list PTFE; later ones don't; and the glass Crispi line lists none[17]. What its product pages don't say is what the Crispi's crisper plates are made of; its product experts have answered on Best Buy that they're aluminum with a nano-ceramic coating[16][19]. SharkNinja's 2025 recall of 1.8 million Foodi multi-cookers was for a pressure-lid burn hazard, not an air fryer fault[68].
Our adviceCook on bare steel or glass when you can, choose ceramic when you want nonstick, and read the filing for your exact model or SKU before you trust the box. If a brand won't tell you what its basket is made of, buy one that will.

A “Y” at the end doesn't mean PTFE by itself: …0253Y is in the no-PTFE table. Buy by the full SKU, not by name or color, and from any other seller ask for the SKU before you buy.
Ninja: SharkNinja's filing lists PTFE for basket air fryers made before Aug. 15, 2024, and none for units made after that date or purchased after Jan. 1, 2025. Those two conditions overlap for older stock sold later, so check the manufacture date on the unit's label; new stock from sharkninja.com is the simplest way to be sure[17].

Dr. Axe's Take
I like air fryers. They get you a crisp, satisfying result with a spoonful of real fat instead of a vat of reused oil, and the studies back that up: far less fat and, most of the time, less acrylamide than deep frying. But I care as much about what the food sits on as how it's cooked.
My first non-negotiable is no PTFE. Air fryers run hot, closer to the point where nonstick starts to break down than most people realize, and there are good glass, steel and ceramic options now. Choose glass or bare stainless first. If you want nonstick, choose ceramic, and check the brand's California disclosure for your exact model before you trust the box.
Second, cook with real fats and real marinades. Brush on avocado oil, olive oil, ghee or tallow instead of aerosol sprays, marinate meats with turmeric, garlic and rosemary, and pull your potatoes at golden.
Third, keep it clean and keep the air moving. Wipe out the grease, open a window, and replace a coated basket the day it's scratched. An air fryer should help you eat more real food, not more processed food.

Frequently asked questions
What is the safest non-toxic air fryer?
By our score, the Our Place Wonder Oven ($185, 8.6/10): food cooks on a chromed-steel basket or rack inside a stainless interior, with no plastic on food surfaces, and Our Place's California filing lists no PFAS. Skip its included ceramic-coated bake pan. It's small (12 L), and America's Test Kitchen found its timer dial stiff. The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (8.5) cooks best and has an uncoated stainless basket; the Fritaire (7.3) cooks in glass but has a hot lift-off lid; and for a ceramic basket, the Typhur Dome 2 (7.0) is the best documented.
Are air fryers toxic?
Not in the way many headlines suggest, but what the basket is made of matters. Many baskets are aluminum with a nonstick coating, PTFE or ceramic, and some models run to 450°F or 480°F, closer to the roughly 500°F where PTFE starts to break down than most people realize. Only one independent test of an air fryer coating has been published: in Sept. 2026, Australia's CHOICE found 120 mg/kg of total fluorine in a GreenPan Bistro crisping tray, which GreenPan attributes to mica in the ceramic topcoat. Choose glass or bare steel, or ceramic if you want nonstick, and check the brand's California AB 1200 filing for PTFE.
Is a ceramic air fryer basket safer than Teflon (PTFE)?
It avoids PTFE and other PFAS by design, which is why ceramic baskets can reach our top 10 and PTFE ones can't. The trade-offs: ceramic is still a coating, made of silica or titania particles in a silicone-based film; lab tests on pans found nanoparticles released only under the harshest scrubbing; and it wears out sooner, about two to five years, GreenPan told Consumer Reports. That's why ceramic caps at 7.0 on our score.
Do glass air fryers work as well?
Mostly, but check what the food sits on. America's Test Kitchen gave the Ninja Crispi Pro 3 of 3 for cooking but found the glass drawer heavy and its handles extremely hot, and the food sits on a crisper plate SharkNinja's staff describe as ceramic-coated aluminum. It rated the Fritaire, which cooks on glass and bare steel, 1 of 3 for safety because its heater is in a hot lid you lift off. If you want uncoated metal instead, only countertop ovens had it in our search: our #1, the Our Place Wonder Oven, and Breville's Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, ATK's top oven pick.
How do I know if my air fryer has PTFE?
Search the brand name plus “AB 1200.” California requires makers to post intentionally added chemicals of concern in a cooking surface, and most list PTFE, or PFAS, by name. Check your exact SKU or production date: Cosori lists some TurboBlaze and Pro LE SKUs with PTFE and others without, including the Cream TurboBlaze it sold on Sept. 28 (…0205Y), and SharkNinja lists PTFE for basket air fryers made before Aug. 15, 2024. Instant lists most Vortex models, including the ClearCook, as having a PTFE-coated cooking surface, and Philips says most of its baskets are PTFE-coated.
What does “PFOA-free” mean on an air fryer?
Very little. PFOA was phased out of U.S. production years ago, and most pans sold as PFOA-free in one nonprofit's tests were PTFE. California now bars “free of” claims for one PFAS when another is added. Look for PTFE-free or PFAS-free instead, backed by the brand's filing.
Is it safe to preheat an empty air fryer?
Follow the manual, once. Makers run the empty unit hot on first use to clear manufacturing residue: Cosori's Pro LE test run ends at 450°F, and Breville runs its oven empty for 20 minutes and warns of vapors. After that, don't preheat an empty coated basket longer than the manual says. In one study, overheated empty PTFE pans released far more PFAS acids at 698°F than PTFE surfaces did in normal use, and pet birds are the most sensitive, so keep them out of the kitchen.
Does air frying cause acrylamide?
It can, like any hot, dry cooking of starchy food. Most lab studies found less acrylamide in air-fried potatoes than deep-fried, up to about 90% less, but a few found as much or more. Soak cut potatoes in water for 10 minutes, don't go past golden, and keep the temperature and time moderate.
Are air fryer liners and silicone baskets safe?
Parchment liners like Reynolds' are rated to 400°F and must be weighed down with food so they don't blow into the heater. Silicone is less clear: in a 2026 study, all 10 silicone air-fryer molds released more volatile compounds than Germany's guidance allows, and one phthalate exceeded its limit in a dry-food test. If you use silicone, heat it empty once, ventilated, before food touches it.
Is air frying better for indoor air than pan frying?
Usually, in the best-controlled study: peak fine particles from air-frying chicken were 0.6 µg/m³ vs 92.9 from pan-frying, and VOCs 20 vs 260 ppb. But a Toronto study found more PM10 per amount of food from air-fried chicken, and a greasy machine produced about 2.4 times the ultrafine particles on empty runs. Clean it, and open a window and an inside door while you cook.
Are air fryers safe around pet birds?
PTFE fumes can kill birds, and veterinarians report poisonings even at recommended temperatures and in other rooms. We found no documented case from an air fryer, but a PTFE-free model (glass, steel or ceramic) removes the risk. Keep birds well away during any first-use test run.
