We are a publisher, not a data broker.
This policy explains what information DrAxe.com collects when you read, subscribe, take a quiz, create an account, or talk to Ask Dr. Axe — how it is used, who sees it, and how to see or delete it yourself.
DrAxe.com (the "Site") is operated by Axe Media Inc. ("Axe Media," "we," "us," or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use the Site and the services offered on it, including our newsletter, quizzes and assessments, member accounts, and the Ask Dr. Axe conversational assistant (together, the "Services"), how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.
The short version: we are a publisher, not a data broker. We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it with advertising networks. Health information you choose to share with us is used to make the Services more useful to you and for nothing else, and you can see it and delete it at any time.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Contact details. Your email address when you subscribe to a newsletter, create an account, or contact us, and your name if you choose to provide it.
- Account information. We use passwordless sign-in. If you create an account, we store your email address and, if you sign in with Google, the basic profile information Google shares with us (your name and email address). We never receive or store a password.
- Quiz and assessment answers. If you take a quiz or assessment on the Site, we collect the answers you give and the results we generate from them. Many of these questions concern your health, habits, and goals.
- Conversations with Ask Dr. Axe. If you use our conversational assistant, we collect the messages you send and the responses generated. If you are signed in, we may keep those conversations so the assistant can remember context between visits, and we may extract facts you have shared (for example a goal, a habit, or a condition you mention) into a profile that you can view, correct, and delete.
- Health information you upload. Some Services let you enter or upload health information such as lab values. We collect what you provide.
- Purchase information. If you buy a membership or other paid Service, our payment processor collects your payment card details. We receive confirmation of the transaction, the last four digits of your card, and your billing name and email, but we never receive or store your full card number.
- Correspondence. Anything you send us by email or through a form on the Site.
Information we collect automatically
- Usage and device data. Pages viewed, links clicked, referring pages, the date and time of your visit, browser type, operating system, screen size, and general performance information.
- Approximate location. Your IP address tells us roughly where you are (usually city or region). We use it for security, to comply with regional laws, and for aggregate reporting. We do not collect precise location.
- Cookies and similar technologies. See Section 6.
2. Health information and consumer health data
Some of what you share with us is information about your health: quiz answers about symptoms or conditions, lab values, and things you tell the Ask Dr. Axe assistant. We treat this information with additional care.
- We use it only to provide and personalize the Services to you, to improve how the Services work in aggregate, and to keep the Services secure.
- We do not sell it, and we do not share it with advertisers, ad networks, data brokers, insurers, or employers.
- We do not use it to target advertising to you on this Site or anywhere else.
- Our analytics see categories of activity (for example, "completed a quiz") and never the content of your answers or conversations.
- You can review the health information associated with your account, correct it, and delete it, including facts our assistant has inferred from your conversations. Deleting your account deletes this information rather than merely hiding it.
- We do not use geofencing around health facilities and never will.
Information you provide to the Services is not protected health information under HIPAA, because we are not a healthcare provider, health plan, or their business associate. The Services are educational and do not create a doctor-patient relationship. If you are referred to a clinic or practitioner from the Site, that provider's own privacy practices apply once you leave the Site.
3. Ask Dr. Axe and automated processing
Ask Dr. Axe is an AI-powered assistant that answers questions using Dr. Axe's published teachings. To generate responses, your messages are processed by artificial-intelligence service providers acting on our behalf. Those providers are contractually prohibited from using your conversations to train their models or for any purpose other than providing the service to us. The assistant's responses are informational and are not medical advice. Please do not share information you do not want stored, such as another person's health details or government identification numbers.
4. How we use information
- To provide the Services, including delivering newsletters you request, operating your account, generating quiz results, and remembering context in your conversations.
- To personalize content and recommendations to you.
- To send transactional messages, such as sign-in links, receipts, and important notices about the Services.
- To send marketing and editorial email you have signed up for. Every such email includes an unsubscribe link.
- To understand how the Site is used and to improve it, using aggregate and de-identified information wherever possible.
- To protect the Site and our users, including detecting abuse, enforcing rate limits, and preventing fraud.
- To comply with law and to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
5. How we share information
We share personal information only in the following circumstances:
- Service providers. Companies that host the Site and its databases, deliver our email, process payments, provide analytics, and provide the AI processing described in Section 3. They may use your information only to perform services for us and are bound by contract to protect it.
- Sponsors and partners. Advertising on the Site is placed by us on behalf of sponsors and partners, including Ancient Nutrition. We report to sponsors in aggregate (for example, how many people saw or clicked a placement). We do not give sponsors your personal information. If you click through to a sponsor's site, that sponsor's privacy policy governs what happens there.
- Legal requirements. When required by law, subpoena, or court order, or when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.
- Business transfers. If Axe Media is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will require the recipient to honor this Privacy Policy.
- With your direction. When you ask us to share information, for example by requesting that results be sent to a practitioner.
We do not sell personal information and we do not "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined in California law. We have not done so in the preceding twelve months.
6. Cookies, analytics, and tracking
We use cookies and similar technologies for three purposes:
- Essential. Keeping you signed in, remembering your preferences, protecting against abuse, and making the Site work. These cannot be turned off without breaking the Site.
- Analytics. Understanding which pages are read and how the Site performs. We use Google Analytics for this. It receives usage and device data as described in Section 1, and we have configured it not to receive the content of your quiz answers or conversations.
- Functionality. Remembering choices such as a dismissed notice or a preferred view.
We do not use third-party advertising cookies or advertising networks that build a profile of you across other websites. Your browser lets you refuse or delete cookies; if you do, some parts of the Site may not work as intended. We treat a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser as a request to opt out of any sale or sharing of your information.
7. Email
If you subscribe to our newsletter or create an account, we will send you email using an email service provider: new articles, the weekly report, and occasional offers from Axe Media. Creating an account opts you in to this email; the consent wording shown when you sign up is recorded with your address. Our emails may record whether they were opened and which links were clicked, which we use to understand what readers find useful. You can unsubscribe from marketing email at any time from your account settings or using the link in any message, and we will honor your request promptly. You cannot unsubscribe from essential transactional messages, such as a sign-in link you requested or a receipt, while you keep an account with us.
8. How long we keep information
We keep personal information for as long as you have an account or subscription with us, and afterward only as long as needed for the purposes described in this Policy or as required by law. Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. Account information, quiz results, conversations, and health information are deleted when you delete your account, subject to short backup-retention periods. Transaction records are kept as required by tax and accounting law. Server logs are kept for a limited period for security purposes.
9. Security
We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information we hold, including encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, and row-level security on health data. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee that unauthorized access will never occur. If a breach affecting your information occurs, we will notify you as required by law.
10. Your choices and rights
Regardless of where you live, you can:
- Access, correct, or delete the personal information in your account from your account settings, or by contacting us.
- Delete your account entirely, which deletes your profile, conversations, quiz results, and health information.
- Unsubscribe from marketing email.
- Ask us what personal information we hold about you and receive a copy in a portable format.
- Ask us to stop processing your information for a particular purpose.
To make a request, email help@draxe.com or write to the address in Section 15. We will verify your identity before acting on a request, usually by confirming control of the email address on the account. You may designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf; we may ask the agent for proof of authorization. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
Residents of California
The California Consumer Privacy Act gives you the right to know the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the categories of sources, the business purposes for collection, and the categories of third parties with whom it is shared; the right to delete; the right to correct; the right to opt out of sale or sharing; and the right to limit use of sensitive personal information. In the preceding twelve months we have collected the categories described in Section 1 (identifiers, internet activity, approximate geolocation, commercial information, and, where you provide it, health information, which is sensitive personal information). We use sensitive personal information only for the purposes permitted by the CCPA regulations, so there is no need to submit a request to limit. We do not sell or share personal information, including that of consumers under 16.
Residents of other U.S. states
If you live in a state with a comprehensive privacy law, such as Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon, or Washington, you have similar rights of access, correction, deletion, portability, and opt-out, and in some states the right to appeal a decision on your request. Exercise them using the contact details in Section 15. If we decline a request, we will tell you why and how to appeal. Health information we collect is "consumer health data" under laws such as Washington's My Health My Data Act, and Section 2 describes how we handle it. We do not sell consumer health data.
Residents of the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland
Our legal bases for processing are: performance of a contract (providing the Services you request), consent (marketing email, health information you choose to share, and cookies that are not strictly necessary), legitimate interests (securing and improving the Site, provided those interests are not overridden by your rights), and legal obligation. You may withdraw consent at any time. You have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. Your information is processed in the United States; see Section 12.
11. Children
The Site is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 where a higher age applies). If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
12. International users
We are based in the United States, and your information is stored and processed there and in other countries where our service providers operate. Those countries may not offer the same level of data protection as your home country. Where required, we rely on standard contractual clauses or other approved safeguards for transfers.
13. Links to other sites
The Site links to other websites, including sponsors, cited research, and clinics or practitioners. We are not responsible for their privacy practices, and this Policy does not apply to them.
14. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. We will post the revised version on the Site with a new "last updated" date, and if a change materially affects how we use information you have already given us, we will notify you by email or a prominent notice on the Site before it takes effect.
