We scored 32 mattresses, from $359 to $5,099 for a queen, on what's inside them, how they pass the federal fire test, and whether their certifications hold up. We looked up every GOTS, GOLS, GREENGUARD, eco-INSTITUT, OEKO-TEX and MADE SAFE claim in the certifier's own database.
Best overall:Happsy Organic Mattress ($1,399, 9.9/10). Organic cotton, wool and GOLS latex over steel coils, and all four of the certifications we could check are verified in the certifiers' databases[1][10][11][18].
Skip: glass fiber on the law tag, an unnamed fire barrier, and memory or polyurethane foam against your body. Check each badge's number in the certifier's database; several didn't match (see the chart).
One caveat: we found no independent lab test of any adult mattress here by brand. The strongest proof is a finished-mattress emissions certificate plus organic certificates you can look up.

What's inside a mattress, and why it matters
Researchers estimate we spend about one-third of our time asleep in the bedroom[119]. Two things decide how “clean” a mattress is: what the layers are made of, and how it passes the federal open-flame test every U.S. mattress must meet[86].
A wool fire barrierWool needs more oxygen to burn than cotton or polyester (25.2% vs 18.4% and 20.6%, per a wool-industry sheet), and makers such as Obasan say untreated wool meets the fire standard[69][37].
A “fire sock”Most mattresses pass with an inner barrier fabric instead. Tempur-Pedic’s own law tags list glass fiber in it[59].
Polyurethane foamMemory foam is polyurethane too; in a test of 8 such mattresses, VOCs rose significantly under sleeping conditions[112].
Crib mattresses gave off about 2.5 times more volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at body temperature than at room temperature, in a test of 20 mattresses [our calculation from 139 vs 56 µg/m² per hour]. Polyurethane foam released more kinds of VOCs.

Check your mattress
Look up the certificate number, not the logo: GOTS licences and GREENGUARD Gold certificates are searchable, and a badge without a number you can find is a claim, not proof[102][104]. Then read the law tag. Under the fire barrier or fabric list, look for “glass fiber”[59].

Start with the mattress
Natural fibers over foam: organic cotton and wool around natural latex or steel coils, with wool as the fire barrier. Then find each certificate number in the certifier's database[102][11].
Skip vinyl and “stain-resistant” pads: a lab found PFAS in 4 of 7 pads and protectors tested (6 of the 7 were sold as stain- or water-resistant)[123], and warm vinyl releases more phthalates[111].
In 25 children's bedrooms, the air around the bed carried more plasticizers and flame retardants than the rest of the room; the researchers advise washing bedding often[114].
Unbox it somewhere ventilated: in a small study of two memory-foam mattresses, VOCs peaked on day one and faded with a half-life of about 24 days[116].
Then keep the air moving: an open window cut bedroom CO₂ from 2,585 to 660 ppm and improved sleep in a student study[120]. EPA advises more ventilation around products that emit VOCs[100].

The least expensive mattress we found whose four certifications we could check are all verified in the certifiers' own databases. Happsy's GOTS licence (GOTS-22062) lists its mattress entries at 97% to 100% organic fibre, the “organic” grade; its GOLS latex listing is current; GREENGUARD Gold certificate 76209-420 runs to September 2027; and MADE SAFE lists it[1][10][11][18]. Happsy also lists EWG Verified, which we couldn't check[20]. Inside are organic cotton, organic wool, a GOLS latex comfort layer and pocketed steel coils sealed without glue. The only synthetics are a plant-based PLA batting, polyester thread and polypropylene coil fabric, and Happsy lists all three[20]. Wool is the fire barrier. Happsy is Naturepedic's sister brand: the GOTS database lists both at 16925 Park Circle Drive in Chagrin Falls, Ohio[1][2]. You get the same certification record as the Naturepedic EOS at about a third of the price. It comes in one height and two feels, and Happsy doesn't publish the latex thickness.

The most adjustable mattress on our list, with the same clean certification record as Happsy. The EOS is a set of layers, a GOLS latex comfort layer over encased coils, that zip inside an organic cotton and wool case; you choose one of five firmness levels for each side and can swap layers later[21]. Its GOLS listing is current, GREENGUARD Gold certificate 63273-420 covers the EOS to September 2027, and MADE SAFE lists it[10][11][18]. One housekeeping note on GOTS: the Oregon Tilth scope certificate held by Safe for Home Products LLC dba Naturepedic, which names the EOS at the organic grade, shows a Sept. 8, 2026 end date in the GOTS database (checked Sept. 27, 2026). Naturepedic's current Control Union licence, which runs to March 2027, lists 85/15 organic cotton-wool mattress entries matching the EOS, which meets the organic grade, so we count it[2]. A firmer, well-built hybrid with every certification we could check current, and unlike the Happsy and Naturepedic hybrids it has no synthetic batting; the only synthetic we found is the polyester cord that ties its tufts. It's 3 inches of GOLS organic Dunlop latex over pocketed coils in seven zones (1,148 in a queen), under an organic cotton cover quilted with organic wool that serves as the fire barrier, button-tufted with no adhesives[33]. GREENGUARD Gold certificate 86683-420, a MADE SAFE listing and a GOLS listing for Quality Sleep Shop, Inc. dba My Green Mattress all check out in the certifiers' databases[11][18][10]. Its GOTS certificate is newer than the public database: Control Union issued licence 1015428 to Quality Sleep Shop, Inc. dba My Green Mattress on Sept. 1, 2026, valid to Aug. 31, 2027, listing its mattresses at the “organic” grade, and the brand posts it on its certificates page[34]. On Sept. 27, 2026 the public GOTS database didn't list that licence yet[9]. The least expensive all-latex mattress in our top 10, and one of the best documented. It's 8 inches of GOLS organic Dunlop latex wrapped in organic wool and an organic cotton knit, and nothing else[25]. Its GOTS scope certificate lists “Organic Mattress, Sleep on Latex” at the organic grade, its GOLS listing is current, GREENGUARD Gold certificate 80102-420 runs to May 2027, and OEKO-TEX lists the mattress at Class I, the strictest class[3][10][11][16]. Two notes. The GOTS certificate is dated to end Oct. 6, 2026, so check for the renewal. And the brand's certifications block still cites an older OEKO-TEX number, 15.HUS.60646, that OEKO-TEX shows as expired, which costs it 1.5 points on honesty[16]. It isn't MADE SAFE-listed. At 125 pounds for a Medium queen, it's heavy to move.

Avocado's least expensive organic mattress, made in Fullerton, California, has a full set of current certifications, and the brand's paperwork problems cost it points. The Eco is organic cotton, organic wool (the fire barrier), 2 inches of GOLS Dunlop latex and up to 1,040 pocketed coils, with the layers held together by steel hog rings rather than glue[27]. GREENGUARD Gold certificate 254915-420 is current, MADE SAFE lists it, and Avocado's GOTS licence and GOLS listing check out[11][18][5][10]. The GOTS database doesn't name Avocado's models, and 4 of its 12 mattress entries are at the lower “made with organic” grade, so the Eco's organic grade is our inference from its cotton-and-wool materials*[5]. But the page calls its OEKO-TEX certificate “Class I,” and OEKO-TEX's database lists Class II. It also cites an eco-INSTITUT latex certificate that the database lists under an Indian latex supplier, Signature Foam, and shows as valid only until November 2025[27][15][17]. And in 2024 Avocado recalled about 55,480 mattress pad protectors that violated the federal mattress-pad flammability rule; no injuries were reported[71]. Together those cost it 4 points on honesty. A solid organic all-latex mattress from a company that holds its own certificates. PlushBeds is sold by Sleep Technologies Inc. dba The Natural Latex Company, and that company's GOTS licence, GOLS listing and GREENGUARD Gold certificate (43184-420) all check out[4][10][11]. Inside are a 6-inch GOLS organic Dunlop core, a latex comfort layer and British organic wool quilted on all six sides as the fire barrier[26]. Know four things before you buy. The GREENGUARD Gold certificate ends Oct. 3, 2026, days after we checked. The page lists a $3,524 compare-at price; $2,024 is what you pay. The page promises a “365 Night Return Policy” in one place and a “100-night sleep trial” in another, so get the terms in writing. And its page says the mattress is eco-INSTITUT certified and “guaranteed free of harmful gasses,” but the certificate it links covers only its supplier's latex foam, which costs it 1.5 points on honesty[26][17]. Build-your-own latex from a company with a clean GOTS record. You choose three 3-inch latex layers (organic Dunlop, or Talalay from Radium, which isn't organic) inside an organic cotton casing quilted with organic wool, the fire barrier[31]. Savvy Rest's GOTS licence lists nine mattress entries, all 100% organic cotton and wool, and GREENGUARD Gold certificate 29088-420 covers the Serenity to May 2027[6][11]. Its GOLS certificate belongs to its Dunlop supplier, Earthfoam (Private) Limited of Sri Lanka, which Control Union lists as certified (the certificate PDF Savvy Rest links ended Aug. 18, 2026, so ask for the renewal); Savvy Rest has no GOLS listing of its own, so we count it at half[32][10]. In December 2023 it recalled about 84 quilted cotton mattress pads under the federal pad flammability rule; no injuries were reported[72]. The catch for most shoppers: no returns, only a 90-day latex exchange.

Organic latex you can tune zone by zone, with clean paperwork but no emissions test. The Classic stacks 8 inches of GOLS organic latex, a firm base and a zoned middle you can rearrange at the shoulders, hips and legs, under a removable 1.5-inch organic wool-and-latex topper[35]. Obasan says untreated organic wool meets the fire standard[37]. Its GOTS licence and GOLS listing are both in its own name[7][10]. What holds it at #8: we found no GREENGUARD Gold or eco-INSTITUT certificate for the finished mattress and no MADE SAFE listing[14], so its “zero off-gassing” line rests on materials, not a chamber test[35]. Adult mattresses aren't returnable; a 180-day comfort policy lets you change the configuration instead[36].

The fewest materials of any mattress we rated: a single 6-inch GOLS and FSC Dunlop latex core wrapped in felted organic wool, which is the fire barrier, inside organic cotton[38][39]. The same mattress sells under the Soaring Heart name at the same $2,939. Its GOTS scope certificate lists “Organic Latex Mattresses” at the organic grade, but it runs only to Sept. 27, 2026. If it isn't renewed, Holy Lamb loses its only verified certification: its score falls to 6.0 and it drops out of our top 10[8]. Holy Lamb gives no GOLS certificate number or latex supplier, and Control Union has no listing in its name; we also found no finished-mattress emissions certificate or MADE SAFE listing[10][14]. It's thin (about 6.5 inches) and firm, and it can't be returned: cancellations carry a 20% restocking fee[38].

An affordable all-latex mattress whose latex certificate checks out and whose other claims can't be checked. It's perforated, seven-zone GOLS Dunlop in layers you can rearrange, natural (not organic) New Zealand wool as the fire barrier, and a zippered organic cotton cover[40]. Control Union lists Commerzilla LLC dba Turmerry as GOLS certified[10]. Turmerry also claims OEKO-TEX, eco-INSTITUT and LGA certifications but gives no numbers to look up, and we found no GOTS licence or finished-mattress emissions certificate[9][14]. That's why it sits at #10 despite all-natural materials. A 120-day trial and a 20-year warranty are generous at $1,699.

How each mattress passes the fire test
Every U.S. mattress must pass a 30-minute open-flame test[86], which has saved lives: researchers credit it with preventing about 65 bed-fire deaths a year in 2015–2016[118]. What matters for you is how a mattress passes. Here's every barrier we could identify, grouped by what the brand discloses.

Most “non-toxic mattress” lists repeat the badges on each brand's page. We start with what's inside, how the mattress passes the fire test, and whether each GOTS, GOLS, GREENGUARD, eco-INSTITUT, OEKO-TEX and MADE SAFE claim holds up in the certifier's own records today. EWG Verified, FSC, Fair for Life, B Corp and Rainforest Alliance claims weren't checked (EWG's site blocked access). It's an editorial assessment built from certifier records, maker disclosures and public records, not our own lab testing and not a medical or safety grade. Price, trial, warranty, firmness and height don't count toward the score; they're in each review's Bedroom fit box.

Materials. Organic cotton, wool and natural latex (organic or not) over steel coils score 10. We subtract the share of the mattress's height that is polyurethane, memory or other synthetic foam (4 inches of foam in a 10-inch mattress costs 4 points); 0.5 for synthetic batting such as polyester or plant-based PLA; 0.25 each for a synthetic blend in the cover or a chemical finish on it; and 0.5 for a disclosed adhesive. A polyurethane or memory-foam comfort layer caps this pillar at 5. When a brand doesn't publish something, we score the class-typical value rather than zero.
Fire barrier. Wool scores 10 (organic credit comes under certifications); a plant fiber whose chemistry the maker states, such as Saatva's thistle, 8; a named synthetic barrier fiber (silica-embedded rayon, aramid such as Kevlar, carbon rayon) 5; an undisclosed “FR fiber blend” or “fiberglass-free sock” 3; glass fiber on the brand's own law tag or admission 0.
Verified certifications. GOTS on the finished mattress at the “organic” grade is worth 3.5 (2.5 at “made with organic”), GOLS for the latex 2.5, a current GREENGUARD Gold or eco-INSTITUT certificate on the finished mattress 2.5, and MADE SAFE 1.5, for a total of 10. A current certificate issued by the certification body and posted by the brand, but not yet in the public database, counts at 75% of its normal credit until it appears there, because our advice is to find the number in the database yourself; an expired certificate counts at zero; and a brand's own badge with no certificate counts for nothing. A supplier's component certificate counts at half; a database listing that shows no certificate number counts at half; a certificate that ends within 30 days of our check counts, with a note. Where the database doesn't name a brand's models, we match a model to an entry by its materials and say so. OEKO-TEX adds 1 at Class I or 0.5 at Class II, and CertiPUR-US adds 0.5 because it covers only the foam. A mattress with no latex skips the GOLS line, and we rescale the rest to 10.
Emissions tested. A current finished-mattress chamber test (GREENGUARD Gold or eco-INSTITUT) scores 10; a GREENGUARD listing with no certificate shown, 6; a foam-only CertiPUR-US listing, 4; nothing, 2.
Honesty and track record. Start at 10. Minus 1.5 for each specific certificate, number or class a brand cites that doesn't match the database (wrong class, expired, not found, or covering another product); minus 1 for a CPSC recall in the last 3 years; minus 1 for an FTC order still in force; minus 1 for an undisclosed layer or fire-barrier makeup; minus 0.5 for health claims beyond the evidence. Lawsuits are allegations: we disclose them and don't deduct unless there's a judgment against the company, an FTC order or a recall. A generic badge with no number or named certifier earns no credit but isn't deducted, and neither is a mistyped certificate number when the brand also posts the correct, current certificate. We deduct only for mismatches on the certifications we score, so an expired Fair Trade certificate isn't deducted. Absolute marketing lines such as “zero off-gassing” or “doesn't emit VOCs” are called out in the claims section below rather than scored, and a layer thickness a brand doesn't publish is treated as class-typical, not as an undisclosed layer.
Caps and who's eligible. Glass fiber in the fire barrier caps a mattress at 4.0 and excludes it from the top 10. An undisclosed fire barrier caps it at 6.0. A polyurethane or memory-foam comfort layer caps it at 7.0, and it can't be a top pick. A mattress with nothing verified in any certifier's database is capped at 6.0. One model per company (per certificate holder) makes the top 10; exact ties on the unrounded score are listed by lower price. Within a company we pick the model that best fits a need: we chose the EOS as Naturepedic's pick for its split firmness, though the Serenade scores the same for less. A mattress with no published data at all isn't rated.
One caveat applies to every score: certificates are the best proof available, not a guarantee. A 2025 study found flame retardants above California's limit in one of two certified children's mattresses[113], and we found no independent chemical test of any adult mattress in this guide by brand.
Why we avoid fiberglass fire barriers and polyurethane foam
Two things separate the mattresses we recommend from the rest: a fire barrier you can name and would want next to your bedroom air, and no polyurethane or memory foam against your body. That's our dividing line.
Tempur-Pedic's own law tags
Tempur-Pedic's own law-tag document (dated Oct. 4, 2024) lists glass fiber as 23% of the netting on its “Adapt Medium – 2018” tag and 37% on the Adapt Medium Hybrid (manufactured Jan. 2024), ProAdapt Medium Hybrid and LuxeAdapt tags; its all-foam ProAdapt tags list “silica” instead[59].
Casper and Zinus, in their own words
Casper says some earlier Original, Original Hybrid, Nova Hybrid and Wave Hybrid mattresses used fiberglass fire socks, and that “all new models are completely fiberglass-free,” using “rayon or proprietary silica blends.” The Original's product page doesn't name its barrier[61][62]. Zinus says new mattresses use a carbon-rayon sleeve and that it “previously” used fiberglass[65]. In two federal fiberglass suits against Zinus, the parties reported a master settlement in principle; one case closed in August 2023 and the other with a judgment in April 2026 whose terms aren't public[81][80].
What the testing found
California's health department found inner socks more than 50% fiberglass in 2 of 4 new mattresses, with up to 1% migrating to neighboring layers; fragments were 30 to 50 microns, large enough to lodge in the nose and throat rather than deep in the lungs[115]. Its investigation named a Zinus Green Tea twin[94].
Why the cover matters
In a two-mattress staff report the Commission didn't review, CPSC staff saw no fiberglass moving through intact ticking, and CPSC has said exposure is expected to be minimal while the cover stays on[89][92]. The Poison Control Center's advice: if the tag says don't remove the cover, don't[93]. CPSC staff also wrote that reported incidents “increased dramatically” over four years[89], yet CPSC has no fiberglass rule[90].
California's 2027 ban, and its loophole
From Jan. 1, 2027, California bans textile fiberglass in new mattresses, but the definition excludes yarns whose glass filaments are “corespun or sheathed by another fiber,” a definition that appears to cover glass-core yarns wrapped in another fiber, like the barrier CPSC staff examined[87][89].
Polyurethane foam and heat
Foam emits more as it warms: 2.5 times the VOCs at body temperature in crib mattresses, and a significant rise “under sleeping conditions” in 8 polyurethane mattresses[109][112]. CertiPUR-US certifies only the foam, not the cover, barrier or finished mattress[108][94].
The fire test itself is worth keeping
Fire barriers exist for a reason: the federal open-flame standard prevented about 65 bed-fire deaths a year in 2015–2016, against about 95 a year before the rule (2002–2005)[118]. The goal is passing it with wool instead of glass or chemicals. Since 2020, California has barred covered flame-retardant chemicals above 1,000 ppm in juvenile products and in the foam of adult mattresses; other adult-mattress components, such as fire barriers, stay exempt until Jan. 1, 2027[88][87]. CPSC has urged mattress makers since 2017 not to use additive, non-polymeric organohalogen flame retardants[91].
A physician's prescription is the one legal way to buy a mattress that hasn't passed the open-flame test. Federal rules exempt from testing a mattress made to a physician's written prescription for a named person's illness or injury; “physician” includes a chiropractor or osteopath. It must carry a permanent label warning that it “may be subject to a large fire if exposed to an open flame”[86]. None of the brands we checked advertised this, and with a wool barrier you don't need it.
What the research says about mattress chemicals
Most of the strongest studies are on crib and children's mattresses, because babies sleep longest and breathe closest to the surface. They show that heat and weight push chemicals out of foam and vinyl, and that labels don't always match what's inside. No study has linked a specific adult mattress to a health outcome. Here's how we'd grade the evidence:
Of 45 measured, released by children's mattresses at room temperature vs body heat plus weight; one of two certified U.S. mattresses exceeded California's flame-retardant limit. 8 mattresses emission-tested (16 analyzed for content).
Crib mattress covers contained plasticizers, some more than 35% by weight, and a warm vinyl cover can make phthalate levels in a baby's breathing zone about four times room levels (a model estimate).
Of 2,666 Americans tested had a metabolite of TDCPP (“chlorinated tris”) in their urine. This shows exposure is common, not that it came from mattresses.
Mattress pads and protectors contained PFAS; 6 of the 7 tested were sold as stain- or water-resistant, and the one that wasn't tested below the screening level (as did two that were). NGO-commissioned lab.
Opening a window cut bedroom CO₂ in a pilot study of 14 students; a second study of 16 used a fan. Lower CO₂ improved objectively measured sleep quality.

Two honest limits. The studies measure emissions and contents, not illness, and most samples are small. And “natural” isn't a guarantee: Consumer Reports notes the word isn't tied to any certification, and in its first “organic” case the FTC alleged that a mattress sold with a “Natural Latex Core” used synthetic latex; the company settled without admitting the allegations[97][84]. That's why our score leans on certificates you can look up.
How to read mattress certifications and law tags
A certification is only as good as what it covers. The two questions that matter: does it cover the finished mattress or one component, and does it test what's inside or what comes out into the air? Then look up the number.

The law tag is the white “do not remove” label. It lists materials by weight, sometimes including the fire barrier's fibers, which is where Tempur-Pedic's glass fiber appears[59]. If the tag says not to remove the cover, leave it on[93].
Latex allergy? What we know, and latex-free picks
Latex allergy affects about 4.3% of the general population and 9.7% of healthcare workers, in a 2016 review[121]. What we couldn't find is any peer-reviewed study measuring latex allergens in mattress foam or reporting reactions to latex mattresses, in either direction. Saatva, for example, says its latex is washed “to remove all allergy-causing proteins” and “never actually comes into contact with the skin”; those are maker claims[41]. If you have a latex allergy, don't rely on them: choose a latex-free mattress.

What about Avocado, Saatva and Essentia?
They're three of the most-marketed natural mattress brands. Here's what the databases and court records show.
Avocado (#5, 9.4)Database mismatches. Avocado calls its OEKO-TEX certificate 24.HUS.86422 “Class I” on its mattress and certification pages; OEKO-TEX's database lists Class II[29][15]. The eco-INSTITUT latex certificate its pages cite is held by an Indian supplier, Signature Foam, and was valid until November 2025[27][17]. Recall. In August 2024 Avocado recalled about 55,480 organic cotton mattress pad protectors that violated the federal mattress pad flammability regulation; no injuries were reported[71]. Lawsuits. A 2023 class action alleged Avocado's “natural,” “organic” and “non-toxic” claims were false, citing a lab analysis of processing chemicals in its latex. It ended by a stipulated dismissal: the named plaintiffs' claims were dismissed with prejudice and the class claims without, with no ruling on the merits[74]. Avocado's site describes the case as “dismissed”[30]; both are accurate. A separate 2026 suit alleges misleading sale reference prices, and the court clerk entered Avocado's default on Aug. 31, 2026, which isn't a judgment[75].
Saatva (Latex Hybrid 7.2; Classic 5.8)Certifications. UL's database files 12 Saatva mattresses under GREENGUARD Gold but shows no certificate number or expiry for any of them, and we found no Saatva entry in the GOTS, GOLS or eco-INSTITUT databases, so its organic latex and wool claims rest on suppliers it doesn't name[13][9][10]. Its FAQ answers “Do latex mattresses off-gas?” with “No,” saying natural latex “doesn't emit VOCs,” an absolute claim no certificate supports, and it says the latex is safe “even for those with latex allergies,” a health claim beyond the evidence that costs the Latex Hybrid and Zenhaven half a point each[41][42]. Lawsuits. A 2025 class action alleges the Saatva Classic's “eco-friendly” and “non-toxic” marketing is misleading given its polyurethane foam; the public docket shows no activity since July 30, 2025[76]; a second alleges PFAS in its crib mattress, with a motion to dismiss fully briefed[77]; and advocacy groups sued in D.C. over the crib mattress in 2024[78]. All are allegations; we found no ruling against Saatva.
Essentia (5.9)GOTS. Essentia's certifications page says “GOTS Certified CU#847578” and that its mattresses “feature a GOTS certified removable cover,” but the scope certificate it posts covers only “bed linen, bed sheets” and ended Sept. 8, 2026, and the GOTS database has no Essentia or FabriQUE listing[51][9]. Its GOLS certificate is in its own name, FabriQUE Essentia, and runs to Oct. 19, 2026; Control Union's public list shows project 847578 as certified under the name “Organic Exchange Inc.”[51][10]Health claims. It sells an $800 to $1,800 EMF “protection” upgrade with claims about blood cells clumping (“Rouleau formation”)[50]; we found no evidence for them. FTC. In 2013 Essentia agreed to an FTC order barring unsupported “VOC-free” claims, neither admitting nor denying the allegations[82][83]. Its Kevlar fire barrier is at least disclosed.
Our adviceFor the cleanest record, Happsy (#1) and Naturepedic (#2) verify on every certification we could check, and My Green Mattress (#3) will too once its new GOTS licence is listed[1][2][34]. Before buying any brand, type its certificate numbers into the databases linked at the top of this page.
What we'd skip
Popular mattresses that fail our dividing line: glass fiber in the fire barrier, a barrier the brand won't describe, or polyurethane foam where you sleep. Some are comfortable and well made; they aren't what we'd call non-toxic.

I want your bed made of things that grew: organic cotton, wool and natural latex, over steel coils if you like some bounce. You spend about a third of your life on it, breathing the air just above it, and body heat pushes more out of foam and vinyl than most people would guess. Polyurethane foam doesn't belong under your face every night.
My non-negotiables are simple. The fire barrier should be wool, and the brand should say so. There should be no memory foam or polyurethane in the layers you sleep on. And every certification should have a number you can type into the certifier's own database. Make that check a habit: it takes a few minutes, and several brands we checked didn't pass it.
Then finish the job around the mattress: a wool or organic cotton protector instead of a vinyl or “stain-resistant” one, organic cotton sheets you wash often, and a window open for the first weeks. A clean bed works best as part of a clean bedroom.

What is the best non-toxic mattress?
The Happsy Organic Mattress ($1,399, 9.9/10). It's organic cotton, organic wool and GOLS latex over steel coils with no glue, wool is its fire barrier, and all four of the certifications we could check (GOTS, GOLS, GREENGUARD Gold and MADE SAFE) are verified in the certifiers' own databases. For couples, the Naturepedic EOS Classic lets you set the firmness on each side; for a firmer hybrid with no synthetic batting, the My Green Mattress Natural Escape (9.8); for all-latex on a budget, the Sleep On Latex Pure Green ($1,299, 9.7); and if you're allergic to latex, the Naturepedic Latex-Free Serenade.
What makes a mattress “non-toxic”?
There's no legal definition. The FTC says a non-toxic claim needs competent and reliable scientific evidence, and Consumer Reports notes “natural” isn't tied to any certification. In practice, look for three things: natural materials (organic cotton, wool and latex, or coils) instead of polyurethane foam, a wool or clearly disclosed fire barrier instead of glass fiber, and certificates you can find in the certifier's database, ideally a finished-mattress emissions test like GREENGUARD Gold.
Do mattresses have fiberglass, and how can I tell?
Some do. Tempur-Pedic's own law tags list glass fiber at 23% to 37% of the barrier fabric in several models, Casper says some earlier models used fiberglass socks (and that all new models are fiberglass-free), and Zinus says it previously used fiberglass. Read the law tag, the white “do not remove” label, for “glass fiber” or “glass fibers,” and check the brand's FAQ. “Fiberglass-free” without a named barrier tells you what it isn't, not what it is. If a tag says not to remove the cover, don't: exposure mostly happens when covers are opened or damaged.
Is memory foam toxic?
Memory foam is polyurethane, and it gives off VOCs, more when it's warm: crib mattresses emitted about 2.5 times more at body temperature. In one small study of two memory-foam mattresses, emissions peaked on the first day and faded with a half-life of about 24 days, and the authors judged the levels below health benchmarks. We don't call it poison, but we'd rather you sleep on wool, cotton and latex, which is why a foam comfort layer caps our score at 7.0.
What's the difference between GOTS, GOLS and GREENGUARD Gold?
GOTS certifies organic textiles, the cotton and wool, and can cover the finished mattress; “organic” grade means at least 95% organic fibre. GOLS certifies the latex: at least 95% natural rubber, no synthetic latex. GREENGUARD Gold is a chamber test of what the finished mattress emits, with limits of 220 µg/m³ total VOCs and 9 µg/m³ formaldehyde. The best mattresses have all three, and you can look each one up by number.
Is CertiPUR-US certification enough?
No. CertiPUR-US covers only the polyurethane foam, not the cover, fire barrier or finished mattress. California's health department, which found fiberglass in a Zinus mattress, makes the same point: CertiPUR-US “only certifies the safety of the foam.” It's better than nothing for a foam mattress, which is why it earns a little credit in our score, but it isn't a non-toxic certification.
Can I be allergic to a latex mattress?
Possibly; we don't know how likely. Latex allergy affects about 4% of people, but we found no peer-reviewed study measuring latex allergens in mattress foam or reporting reactions to latex mattresses. Saatva, for example, says its latex is washed to remove allergy-causing proteins and never touches the skin; those are maker claims. If you have a latex allergy, choose a latex-free mattress such as the Naturepedic Latex-Free Serenade.
How long does a new mattress off-gas?
It depends on what's in it. In the one study we found that tracked memory-foam mattresses for a month, VOCs peaked on day one and faded with a half-life of about 24 days. Natural latex and wool have their own smell; we found no study that timed it. Either way, unbox it in a ventilated room, keep a window open for the first few nights if you can, and wash new bedding before you use it.
Is an “organic” mattress 100% organic?
Rarely. A GOTS “organic” grade means at least 95% of the textile fibre is certified organic, and “made with organic” means 70% to 94%. Coils, thread, coil fabric and some batting aren't organic; good brands list them. The latex is certified separately under GOLS. A mattress can't carry the USDA organic seal just for GOTS certification, and about 30% of respondents in a 2016 FTC-USDA survey wrongly believed USDA certifies organic claims for products like mattresses and shampoos.
Can I buy a mattress that skips the fire test?
Only one way skips the fire test: a physician's prescription. Federal rules exempt from testing a mattress made to a physician's written prescription for a named person's illness or injury (the rule counts chiropractors and osteopaths as physicians), and it must carry a permanent warning that it may be subject to a large fire. With a wool fire barrier you don't need one: makers such as Obasan say untreated wool meets the fire standard with no added chemicals.
Are expensive organic mattresses worth it?
Spread over 10 years, the difference shrinks: our top 10 cost $0.36 (Sleep On Latex Pure Green) to $1.21 (Obasan Classic) a night, against $0.10 for a sale-priced all-foam Zinus. You don't need the most expensive: the Happsy and Sleep On Latex Pure Green are under $1,400 with verified certifications. Most of what you pay extra for at the top is customization, like split firmness or swappable layers, not more verified certifications.
