If you've been doing everything right, eating clean, exercising, but somehow you're still not feeling your best, your energy's dragging, your memory is slipping, and it's frustrating because you know there's more to your potential. Well, what if the issue isn't just in your routine, but it's deep down inside your cells?
You know, you're investing in the best supplements, working out regularly, and sticking to a clean diet. But if your cells are stuck in what's called cell danger response, all the hard work might not be paying off as it should. Think of your cells like a house under renovation.
You can bring in the highest quality materials like the best supplements and clean foods, but if the workers inside the house are on lockdown because of a storm, nothing gets done. The materials just pile up unused. That's what happens when your cells are in CDR. They can't fully use the good stuff you're giving them.
Getting out of CDR, the cell danger response, is the key to unlocking your body's full potential. When your cells are no longer in protective mode, they can finally use the nutrients, hormones, and energy you're working so hard to provide. That's when everything starts to click. Your energy improves, your workouts become more efficient, and you start to feel better. Feel like yourself again.
Go to beyondbloodwork.com to learn how to break free from cell danger response and make the effort pay off. Hey everyone, welcome to the Dr. Josh Axe Show where each and every week we explore how to grow in body, mind, spirit, and take your health and your life to the next level. Today we're going to be diving into the topic of glyphosate.
Now glyphosate is the active compound in the herbicide Roundup, which has been widely used in agriculture and home garden It's been happening for decades. And the reality is it's not just killing weeds, it's killing our bodies and our organ systems, including our gut microbiome.
And most of us, even if you're eating natural and organic often, we've still been exposed to it every time we eat out or with any food that's ever not homegrown or certified organic. And because of it, many of us need to detoxify our bodies Of this chemical for some of us that's still sitting in our gut, in our cells, in certain organ systems.
And so in this episode, I'm gonna cover the latest scientific studies surrounding glyphosate, its potential risks, and how you can start to heal your body and your loved ones right now from this dangerous chemical. Before I dive in though, make sure to subscribe to the channel and hit the link to the show notes to also subscribe.
To my weekly newsletter where you'll get my top tips for natural healing delivered straight into your inbox. Now, here's a reality. The biggest thing that glyphosate impacts is our gut microbiome, and our microbiome is crucial for digestion, for nutrient absorption, for nutrient creation, for immunity, and for your overall health.
And recent studies have suggested that glyphosate might disrupt these bacterial communities. A 2018 study published in a major medical journal found that glyphosate damages the gut microbiota of bees. And we find this very same thing in humans where it's also damaging the gut bacteria of humans, causing inflammatory diseases, metabolic disorders, autoimmune diseases.
And another study was published in 2013 that found that glyphosate inhibits something called cytochrome P450. This is an enzyme in your gut which plays a key role in detoxifying chemicals and supporting liver function. And this can lead to an imbalance of amino acids and a higher risk of inflammatory bowel disease.
So many, if you look at the statistics around Crohn's and ulcerative colitis and IBD and IBS and even gas and bloating and SIBO, we see all of these digestive diseases on the rise. Leaky gut syndrome, of course, is another one. And glyphosate is one of the main culprits. Glyphosate is estimated to affect about 54% of gut bacterial species, many of which are essential for amino acid production.
So even building muscle, it's important for that. It's important for the health of your skin, hair, and nails, for tissue recovery, for cell regeneration, for longevity. And so this glyphosate, is damaging to everything, but especially our guts.
You know, one of the most alarming effects associated with glyphosate is its potential role in also increasing intestinal permeability, also known as leaky gut syndrome.
And there was a 2021 study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, and they highlighted that glyphosate damages the tight junctions of your gut, opening it up to where now damaging Pathogens, toxins, undigested food particles like gluten and casein and other toxins now leak into the bloodstream, which then results in autoimmune disease, allergies, and even neurological disorders.
And I've seen this over the years. Autoimmune disease, allergies, neurological disease, mood disorders continue to increase, and a big part of it is glyphosate. We also see glyphosate is not only damaging our gut, it's also damaging our liver. Chronic low-level exposure to glyphosate has been associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
In fact, chronic low-level exposure to glyphosate has been linked to a 20% increased risk in the incidence of fatty liver disease in animals. Now, this will make you hold body fat, not be able to detoxify as well, leading to neurological disease, brain fog, more common infections, and a host of other disorders. There's also another study found that it increases your risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
By 41%. So we see glyphosate impacting the gut negatively, impacting the liver. We also see it impacting our hormonal systems. Listen to this. A 2019 study published in the Environmental Health Perspectives found that perinatal exposure to glyphosate in rats led to delayed puberty and alterations in reproductive organ function.
Now we see this where there's boys now having too high of estrogen, having more feminine-like qualities. We We see women now, especially young girls, hitting puberty much earlier, hitting their menstrual cycle sometimes at 11, 12, 13, when it should be closer to at least 14, but if not 15 or 16 years old.
So it's so much earlier today due to all of these chemicals and xenoestrogens, but also the glyphosate that's found in our food supply. And so the primary systems in the body that glyphosate is wrecking is your gut microbiome, Our liver, and our hormonal systems. And it's been linked to numerous diseases that we've talked about.
And I want to talk— and I do want to say that you might think to yourself, well, you know, I eat a lot of good food. I don't think I've had that much glyphosate. Listen, think about every time you eat at a restaurant that does not— where that doesn't say on the foods and at the restaurant certified organic.
Almost every single food then that is not certified organic has been sprayed with glyphosate and these chemicals and these pesticides, okay? And even for myself, I think about, hey, maybe, you know, it was maybe Christmas last year or certain times of the year around certain holidays.
Hey, I went out to eat with family, even at a high-quality restaurant, you know, you're getting Wagyu beef or you're getting a lean filet or you're getting, you know, the chicken on there, but if it doesn't say organic or pastured or wild, 99% of the time, it's likely been sprayed with glyphosate and these other chemicals.
And so even for myself being aware, maybe there's only a handful of times a year, but still, when that happens, what I want to start doing is detoxifying glyphosate from my body. And there is an amazing, amazing type of bacteria that has been shown in clinical studies to detoxify the body.
Now I want to go through all of the supplements and all of the herbs and foods that really help your body detoxify of glyphosate. But the first and most potent is a type of bacteria. It's a soil-based organism called Bacillus subtilis. And if you want to get the exact strain, it's known as Bacillus subtilis AB22.
And this probiotic strain has been shown promising results in breaking down glyphosate residues in the gut and even in healing the soil. A 2021 study published in the Environmental Science and Pollution Research found that Bacillus subtilis can degrade up to 45% of glyphosate residue in soil within just 7 days.
So think about this, the, the earth is polluted, you add in this bacteria, and within 1 week, nearly 50% of all of the Roundup, all of the glyphosate, has been destroyed. Hey everyone, Dr. Josh Axe here. Listen, if you're struggling with restless nights and daily stress, I have a revolutionary solution for you.

Rest, recover, and rejuvenate. And when used as a supplement, Bacillus subtilis AB22 has been observed to reduce glyphosate levels in the gut, leading to at least a 15 to 30% improvement in gut microbiota balance among participants exposed to glyphosate.
So we're talking about a major, major improvement in people that are using Bacillus subtilis AB22, the most effective thing you could do in order to detoxify glyphosate from your body. Now there's other bacterial strains that are also beneficial. Those include Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus plantarum.
One of those is found primarily in things like fermented coconut or dairy, but a lot of fermented foods. And then Lactobacillus plantarum is found in high doses in sauerkraut and kimchi. Now both strains of these have shown potential in reducing glyphosate toxicity in animal studies.
For example, there was a study and it found that it reduced oxidative stress rest caused by glyphosate by up to 35% in just a short period of time. So we see that these other bacteria also support detoxification. And in other studies, Lactobacillus plantarum was found to improve leaky gut and the health of the gut microbiota.
So if you can find a probiotic specifically, most importantly a soil-based organism probiotic that has Bacillus subtilis AB22, and then You can either get it as a supplement or get it in your food supply. Get more fermented foods via sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, and then also doing some like coconut yogurt or raw organic kefir or yogurt.
These foods, along with the soil-based organism, are the greatest detoxifiers of glyphosate out there. Now, after that, you can do some binders, but these tend to be not ideal long-term, like activated charcoal.
Now, there was one study published in the Journal of Toxicology, and they found that activated charcoal can absorb over 60% of ingested glyphosate within an hour when taken at onset of exposure. However, I do want to say doing activated charcoal daily is not good because it's going to bind to minerals in your body, cause you to be constipated.
So it's something you tend to want to do just when you're doing a very short-term detox. But again, it can be beneficial. Now, what's maybe a little bit better than that is clay. I don't recommend clay every day unless you have IBS Uh, I, I— inflammatory bowel disease with diarrhea, or you have loose stool, or you, or you have too many bowel movements.
But doing a little bit of clay regularly, you can do it for longer periods than activated charcoal. So activate— so doing some bentonite liquid clay, like a 4th of a teaspoon or half a teaspoon, um, for a longer period of time, not every day, but that can also be beneficial for some people as well. Now something else I really like is humate and fulvic acid supplements.
Fulvic acid is a natural compound known for its chelation benefits, and it helps bind to and transport toxins out of the body. There was a study published in the Environmental Research Journal, and it showed that fulvic acid supplementation resulted in a 28% reduction in glyphosate residue in urine samples among agricultural workers.
So fulvic and humic acid, they're found in an ancient superfood called shilajit, Which was used oftentimes in Ayurvedic medicine. And it's almost like a type of volcanic soil, very similar to that. But, but this humate that's found in soil, and you'll see these healthy things are found in soil, clay, right? Shilajit, the fulvic and humic acid, these are all dirt.
I wrote a book many years ago, some of you may have read it, it was called Eat Dirt. And I went and I studied some of these tribes in Africa, and what they would do is if they had any form of poisoning, Glyphosate, of course, is a poison, but other forms of poison, what they would do is they would go do clay or shilajit, and because those bind to these toxins and pull them out of the body.
And so there's an old National Geographic article that was titled Let Them Eat Dirt, and it talked about these tribes and that one of their forms of medicine for healing, especially if they'd ever been poisoned was doing clay or things high in humic and fulvic acid. And so we want to embrace those sort of ancient, um, the ancient wisdom to help heal our bodies today.
So again, if you know you've been exposed to glyphosate, best thing you could do is take a soil-based organism probiotic, specifically with Bacillus subtilis AB22. Get some more probiotic foods like sauerkraut, like coconut yogurt or raw organic yogurt. Get some shilajit or humic and fulvic acid or a little bit of clay. And it's going to help heal your body.
Now, in addition to support detoxifying your body, you want to consume foods that help produce glutathione in your body. Now, you can take specific supplements like glutathione itself or N-acetylcysteine, which helps increase glutathione production in the body. There are herbs that do that as well, I'll mention, but that's important. Also magnesium and zinc.
Studies show that glyphosate interferes interferes with magnesium and zinc absorption. So if you know you've been exposed, taking magnesium, zinc can help. By the way, did you know that probably 2 of the top 5 nutrients most people are deficient in are magnesium and zinc? And I believe a big reason for that is so many people are exposed to glyphosate on a regular basis.
And so we want to consume things that are going to support that. Some of those are going to be cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, cauliflower, bok choy, Brussels sprouts. These are rich in compounds that support liver detoxification and protect your cells from oxidative damage.
In fact, one study discovered that cruciferous vegetables enhance phase 2 liver detox enzymes by up to 30%, which helps break down and excrete glyphosate and other harmful chemicals from your body. And then my favorite herb for detoxifying glyphosate is milk thistle.
Now, milk thistle contains silymarin, a compound known for its glutathione and superoxide dismutase boosting properties, which help detoxify glyphosate from your body. And there was one study found that it can reduce liver enzyme markers by up to 40% due to its detoxification capacity.
And if somebody has had their gut, or specifically their liver, damaged by glyphosate, milk thistle actually helps regenerate liver tissue faster. A few other things that are good for detoxification, chlorella and spirulina. These are algaes that can help bind to and remove it from the body. And I also like infrared sauna therapy.
A study published in the Alternative Therapies in Health Medicine Journal found that 45 minutes of sauna exposure increased the excretion of pesticides, including glyphosate, by up to 25% in sweat samples. So regular sauna sessions about 2 to 3 days a week can help you gradually reduce glyphosate load in your body. So if you've been exposed to glyphosate, remember this.
Number one, you have to decrease your exposure, okay? Stay away from conventional meat, conventional dairy, conventional produce, and buy organic whenever possible, or talk to your local farmer and find one that does not use glyphosate. Glyphosate or pesticides. Okay, so that's the number one way to heal is don't consume it in the first place.
After that, eat more vegetables, especially green leafies and cruciferous vegetables.
Exercise regularly, do some sauna time, and supplementally, remember probiotics, specifically Bacillus subtilis, getting more probiotic-rich foods, doing milk thistle, supporting glutathione levels, and taking things like shilajit or that humic and fulvic acid Those are the biggest needle movers when it comes to healing your body and reducing the glyphosate within your system.
Remember, glyphosate is a chemical that is sprayed on so many foods today, and it should be banned and should be completely outlawed. But still today, due to modern agriculture and its connection to government, it's still legal, though it's destroying the bodies of our kids and many other people today.
There are hundreds of millions of people that don't know the reality of how damaging glyphosate is to their bodies, to our environment, to bees, to everything. And there are all-natural ways using regenerative agriculture, so it's not necessary.
