Sleep & stress: where to start.

Can't fall asleep, wake at 3am, wired but tired. Sleep is the lever that moves everything else — and it usually comes down to cortisol rhythm, light and timing, or blood sugar overnight.

Where should I start?

Three steps, in order.

1Fix the rhythm

Morning light, caffeine before noon, lights down an hour early. The three changes that work before any supplement.

2Find your night

Common questions

Straight answers.

Why do I wake up at 3am and can't get back to sleep?

A 3am wake-up is usually blood sugar or cortisol. A small protein-and-fat snack before bed for a week tells you which; if it persists, test progesterone and the cortisol rhythm.

Does magnesium help you sleep?

Yes for most people who are low — which is most people. Glycinate, 200–400 mg at night, is the form and timing studied.

Is melatonin safe to take every night?

Low doses (0.5–1 mg) are well tolerated for timing sleep; higher doses aren't better. It doesn't fix a cortisol problem — rhythm does.
