8-Week Lifestyle Program Shows Early Edge on Thinking Scores in Mild Cognitive Impairment

A small pilot trial found an 8-week lifestyle program linked to better thinking scores versus health education alone.

A pilot trial published October 31, 2026 in Neuroscience found that an 8-week lifestyle intervention combining exercise, diet changes, cognitive training and social engagement was feasible and linked to a measurable difference in thinking scores in adults with mild cognitive impairment, compared with a health education control group.

30adults, 8 weeks
100%retention
56.7%recruitment rate

The pilot randomized controlled trial enrolled 30 adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a stage of memory or thinking decline beyond normal aging but not yet dementia. Participants were randomly assigned to an 8-week multidomain lifestyle program combining nutritional modification, structured exercise, cognitive training and social engagement, or to a health education control group. The recruitment rate was 56.7%, and 78.9% of eligible people approached agreed to join. Retention held at 100% in both groups, with high adherence to the intervention. No significant change in cognitive function showed up within the intervention group alone, but a significant difference emerged between the two groups at the 8-week mark. Compared with the control group, people in the lifestyle program reported stronger gains in how supported they felt by others and in their overall quality of life, while their depressive symptoms held steady instead of getting worse.

The authors describe this as a feasibility study: the goal was testing whether people would join, stick with it and tolerate it, not proving the program changes brain function. No mechanism was reported; in general, combining physical activity, nutrition, mental stimulation and social contact is thought to support brain health through several pathways at once, including blood flow, inflammation and mood.

Because this was a feasibility trial, the cognitive finding reflects a comparison between two small groups, not a proven treatment effect. The between-group difference appeared without a measurable within-group change in the intervention arm alone, a pattern a larger sample would need to confirm.

Preliminary between-group results favouring the intervention require confirmation in a larger, adequately powered randomized controlled trial

With just 30 people split across two arms and only 8 weeks of follow-up, this is a small, short early look; the authors say a larger, adequately powered trial with longer follow-up is next.

Dr. Axe’s Take

This multidomain approach is exactly what I'd expect to support a stressed brain: feeding it well, moving the body, giving it new problems to solve and keeping people connected to others. This small trial shows people with mild memory decline can stick with all four habits at once for eight weeks, with full retention in both groups. I would not wait for a bigger trial to start building these habits now. This week, build meals around leafy greens, berries and fatty fish, add a daily walk or strength session, and pair one mentally engaging activity, like a puzzle or a class, with another person.
