Kenya Releases Five Ebola Patients After Negative Virus Tests
Kenya's health ministry discharged five recovered Ebola patients and dozens of contacts as the country reports no new infections in two weeks.

ABC News reported on November 3, 2026, that Kenya discharged five patients who had tested negative for Ebola and had no remaining symptoms, while two patients stayed hospitalized under supportive care.
Kenya's Ministry of Health discharged five Ebola patients on Tuesday after their test results came back negative and their symptoms had cleared, ABC News reported. Two patients remain hospitalized on supportive care. The ministry also released 46 contacts of Kenya's first confirmed patient, after 20 released the previous week; a final 52 contacts are expected to finish their 21-day quarantine and be released next week.
Kenya recorded its first Ebola case on October 6, when a man who had made his way from Congo through Uganda received a positive test result; he died hours later at Nairobi Hospital. Officials traced 135 contacts linked to that patient, eight of whom later tested positive, and one died, bringing Kenya's total deaths to two. The wider outbreak, which began in Congo in May, has killed more than 5,000 people out of over 10,000 reported cases, among the worst Ebola outbreaks on record.
Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of someone sick or dead from the virus, which is why tracing and quarantining contacts for 21 days, the outer edge of the incubation period, is central to stopping spread. Eight of the first patient's 135 contacts were infected, but two weeks with no new infections while dozens more finished quarantine is a concrete marker that tracing contained the exposure.

Ebola patients released in Kenya after negative tests and no symptoms, with two still hospitalized
The Ministry of Health said Kenya won't declare the outbreak over until 42 days, double the incubation window, pass after the last patient recovers, and it's still tracking 52 more contacts. Whether undetected transmission chains exist outside the identified contacts isn't addressed.
Dr. Axe’s Take
This reads as a real win for contact tracing, the most important tool against a virus like Ebola. Eight of the first patient's 135 contacts did get infected, but five recoveries and two weeks without a new case tell me Kenya moved fast enough to get ahead of it. What it shows is how much old-school public health work, finding and watching every contact, still matters. I wouldn't call this outbreak over until Kenya's own 42-day countdown finishes.
