Rebecca Gayheart Shares How She Told Daughters About Eric Dane's ALS

Gayheart described the family conversation about Eric Dane's ALS diagnosis, offering a window into how parents explain a fatal disease to children.

Us Weekly reported on November 4, 2026, that Rebecca Gayheart recalled the difficult conversation she and Eric Dane had with their daughters about his ALS diagnosis.

Rebecca Gayheart, 55, told Drew Barrymore in a Personal Space podcast episode released November 4 that she and Eric Dane sat down with daughters Billie, now 16, and Georgia, now 14, and a family therapist after Dane's ALS diagnosis. ALS is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Dane was diagnosed in 2024 and shared it publicly in April 2025.

Gayheart said the diagnosis call came in while one daughter was in the bathroom, and she stepped into a closet to take it. She recalled explaining what ALS was to the girls, saying it was difficult because they had so many questions and had never heard of the disease before. When told it had no cure, she said the girls responded by asking if their dad would still be fine, unable to process the situation the way an adult could.

Dane's family confirmed his death in February at 53, saying he died following a battle with ALS and became an advocate for awareness and research. In a posthumous memoir, Dane wrote that every morning he dictated a text to his daughter Georgia telling her good morning and that he loved her, speaking slowly into a phone his nurse held to his mouth.

It was really hard to tell them because they had so many questions, and they’d never heard of ALS before.

Gayheart's comments are a personal recollection shared on a podcast, not a clinical account of ALS progression or treatment, and reflect one family's experience rather than a template for discussing a terminal diagnosis with children.

Dr. Axe’s Take

A disease with no cure doesn't fit the way children expect illness to resolve, and that mismatch is what made this conversation so hard for the Dane family. Bringing in a family therapist, as Gayheart and Dane did, gives kids someone who can meet them at their level instead of leaving parents to find the words alone. If I were walking a family through a diagnosis like this, I would point them toward grief counselors and support groups early, before a crisis conversation becomes unavoidable. Dane's daily ritual of telling his daughter he loved her, even as ALS took his voice, shows that connection outlasts the ability to speak clearly.
