Single Dose Of Cocoa Flavanols Fails To Sharpen Attention In Young Adults

A 710 mg cocoa flavanol drink showed no edge over placebo or sugar water for visual attention in 48 college students.

A single 710 mg dose of cocoa flavanols did not sharpen visual attention in healthy young adults, according to a crossover trial published October 15, 2026 in the British Journal of Nutrition.

3drink conditions

Forty-eight undergraduate students completed a randomized, double-blind crossover trial testing three drinks on separate days with a one-week washout between sessions: a flavanol-rich cocoa beverage containing 710 mg of cocoa flavanols, a flavanol-free cocoa beverage as placebo, and plain sugar water as a control. After each drink, participants completed a visual search task and a spatial cueing task, which measure overt attention (actively scanning for a target) and covert attention (shifting focus without moving the eyes). Statistical tests comparing the three drinks found no difference in accuracy or reaction time on the visual search task, and no difference in accuracy or reaction time on the spatial cueing task.

Cocoa flavanols are plant compounds that have been reported in prior research to support blood flow by helping blood vessels produce nitric oxide, a molecule that relaxes vessel walls. Earlier research cited as background in this paper linked cocoa flavanols to gains in sustained attention and attentional control, but the authors write that this single 710 mg dose did not improve either overt or covert visual attention in this sample, and state a single acute dose may not be sufficient to produce a measurable effect in the population they tested.

This was a single-dose, same-day test in young, healthy college students, not a trial of repeated daily use or an older or cognitively impaired population. Funding and conflicts not reported in the abstract.

Dr. Axe’s Take

One cup of a flavanol-rich cocoa drink did not move the needle on attention in healthy college students, and I take that result at face value. I would not expect a single dose of cocoa flavanols to meaningfully sharpen attention in people who are already young and well-rested. Cocoa flavanols have stronger evidence for cardiovascular function with weeks of regular intake, not a one-time cognitive boost. For a daily habit, I recommend dark chocolate with high cacao content or minimally processed cocoa powder, paired with consistent sleep, hydration and morning sunlight for real attention support.
