Sixth Measles Death Reported In Pennsylvania Outbreak, NBC News Says
A sixth measles-related death in Pennsylvania was reported October 12, 2026, by NBC News: a 39-year-old unvaccinated woman in Franklin County died of what a county coroner's spokesperson called a probable acute cardiac event due to possible complications of measles.
A sixth measles-related death in Pennsylvania's outbreak was reported October 12, 2026, by NBC News. The Franklin County coroner's office said a 39-year-old unvaccinated woman died of what a spokesperson described as a probable acute cardiac event due to possible complications of measles, and noted she had underlying medical conditions it did not specify. As of the preceding Friday, Pennsylvania had confirmed 1,136 measles cases with 219 hospitalizations, and two-thirds of those cases were diagnosed in adults. The state Health Department said it is conducting a thorough review of the reported death. NBC News reported this is the sixth measles-related death in the state in less than two months: two infants in Lancaster County in late August, a Jefferson County woman in her 40s with asthma and severe lung disease, an 18-year-old in Mifflin County who died of a rare brain-inflammation complication of measles, and a 20-year-old Philadelphia-area woman with leukemia-related immune compromise, reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer in early October. Nationally, the CDC has recorded 4,080 measles cases this year, the most since 1991.
Cardiac complications from measles can occur but are uncommon, NBC News reported. Historically, measles causes 1 to 2 deaths per 1,000 cases, and Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, told NBC News he believes Pennsylvania's actual case count is closer to 6,000, calling official tallies a vast underestimate. Less than 1% of Pennsylvania's cases occurred in fully vaccinated people, and two doses of the MMR vaccine provide 97% protection, usually for life.

Dr. Axe's Take
Six deaths in under two months tells me this virus is finding the most vulnerable people in under-vaccinated communities and hitting them hard, especially those with existing heart, lung or immune conditions. I won't tell anyone what to decide about vaccination, but I do think every family should talk to their pediatrician about immune status and health history before exposure risk climbs further where they live. Right now I'd focus on the basics that support immune function: vitamin D status checked and corrected, real sleep, and whole foods rich in vitamin A for healthy mucosal defenses. If you suspect measles exposure or symptoms, get evaluated promptly rather than waiting it out at home.
