Plant Compound Magnoflorine Eases Fatty Liver Disease in Mice

A compound found in several dietary plants reduced liver fat, inflammation and scarring in mice by switching on a cellular fuel-sensing pathway.

At a glance
  • What they found: Magnoflorine reduced liver fat, inflammation and scarring in the mice by switching on AMPK, a fuel-sensing pathway in liver cells.
  • Who was studied: Male mice fed a high-fat, high-fructose diet for 12 weeks to cause fatty liver disease.
  • What it doesn't show: Whether it works the same way in people.

A plant alkaloid called magnoflorine eased metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), the more severe form of fatty liver disease, in mice fed a high-fat and high-fructose diet by switching on the energy-sensing enzyme AMPK, according to a study published October 27, 2026 in Phytotherapy Research.

Researchers fed male mice a high-fat and high-fructose diet for 12 weeks to induce MASH, a severe form of fatty liver disease marked by fat buildup, inflammation and scarring, then gave graded doses of magnoflorine, a quaternary aporphine alkaloid found in dietary botanicals. Using liver tissue staining and gene-expression analysis, the researchers found magnoflorine eased hepatic steatosis (fat buildup), inflammation and fibrosis (scarring) in the diet-fed mice. Exact percentage changes and sample size were not reported.

Gene-expression analysis identified activation of AMPK, a nutrient-sensing pathway cells use to respond to available fuel, as the central mechanism, according to the authors. Magnoflorine-driven AMPK activation triggered lipophagy, where liver cells break down stored fat droplets, which affected fat-burning and inflammation. The findings held up in human liver cells exposed to a fatty acid in a lab dish. When researchers silenced the AMPK gene in liver cells and mouse liver tissue, magnoflorine's benefits on fat clearance and MASH improvement disappeared, confirming the pathway's role.

MASH has few effective treatment options, which is why plant compounds that influence liver fat metabolism draw research interest. AMPK works as a cellular energy sensor; when fuel runs low, it tells cells to burn stored fat rather than hoard it. By switching on this pathway, magnoflorine appears to help liver cells clear fat droplets they would otherwise accumulate, backed by gene-silencing experiments that reversed the effect once AMPK was blocked.

This is a mouse and cell-culture study, not a human trial, and the abstract did not report sample sizes, dose amounts or percentage changes in liver fat, inflammation or scarring. Whether magnoflorine works the same way in humans is the next question to answer.

Dr. Axe’s Take

Fatty liver disease, especially the more advanced MASH stage, responds to the same upstream levers I emphasize for any liver-fat issue: cutting added fructose from sodas and processed foods, and supporting the liver's own fat-clearing machinery. In this mouse study, the compound worked by switching on a fuel-sensing pathway your liver already has. I wouldn't wait on a supplement version of this; I'd focus this week on pulling added sugar out of the diet, eating more bitter greens and cruciferous vegetables that support liver function, and considering intermittent fasting, which naturally activates that same AMPK pathway.

Design
Animal and cell study: graded doses of magnoflorine given to diet-induced MASH mice; AMPK gene silenced in liver cells and mouse liver to test the mechanism.
Dose
Graded magnoflorine dosing; exact amounts not reported in the abstract.
Primary result
Magnoflorine reduced liver fat buildup, inflammation and scarring in MASH mice; exact percentage changes not reported.
