On The Chopping Block: Cereal Bars

Today on The Chopping Block, we’re going to be talking about cereal bars, like Nutrigrain bars, and we will see at the end if they will pass the test and if they’re going to get chopped or not.

When I was a kid, I would eat cereal bars, like Nutrigrain bars, not by the bar, but by the box. I know my mom bought them for me because she thought they were made with whole grains and fruit, and that they were really healthy, but there are 3 reasons why we’re going to look at Nutrigrain bars and cereal bars getting chopped. Number 1 is the sugar content. I went this morning and picked up a box of these bars and found there are 7 different types of sugar in each one of these little bars; 7 different types of sugar, 2 different types of high-fructose corn syrup, other genetically-modified sugars. Actually, 2 of these little bars has more high-fructose corn syrup and sugar than a can of soda. These little breakfast bars, it’s like you might as well be drinking a soda for breakfast.

Second problem with these bars is hydrogenated oils. They’re packed with soybean oil, vegetable oil, canola oil; these GMO oils that are highly toxic, cause heart disease in adults and in children. Not something you want to be eating. Last but not least, all the food colorings: Red 40, Blue #5, Yellow #4. TBQH is a very toxic additive in flavor enhancers, like MSG, that’s added to these food bars that’s on the label. It’s packed with wheat which is very, very high on gluten which is hard on your digestive tract and your kids’ digestive tract. Those are all the negatives when it comes to doing a lot of these cereal bars that big companies like Kellogg’s and General Mills market to us and big time-market to our kids for breakfast.

When we’re looking at these cereal bars today, they’re going to get chopped here, all the way. We’re going to go ahead and get rid of these. Other good options are things like Lara Bars; you’ve got dates, you’ve got nuts and seeds for your kids for breakfast. Doing my berry smoothie is another great options to your kids for breakfast that’s fast and on-the-go. Make your homemade bars at home.
