Interaction check: Low. No drug interaction with shilajit has been documented in people. If you take testosterone or other hormone therapy, tell your prescriber before you start, since shilajit raised testosterone and DHEA-S in a trial. As a precaution, take it two hours away from your medications: when researchers bound an epilepsy drug to fulvic and humic acids from shilajit, the drug dissolved and passed through membranes differently in lab tests and worked differently in rodents. Interactions are rated separately and don't change the score.229

    Shilajit at a glance

Shilajit is a dark, mineral-rich resin that seeps from high mountain rock, prized for thousands of years as a rejuvenator, and in placebo-controlled trials a purified extract raised testosterone in middle-aged men, helped men keep strength through hard exercise and slowed bone loss in women after menopause.1234

    • Testosterone: in 75 men aged 45 to 55 who finished a 90-day placebo-controlled trial, total testosterone rose about 20% on 250 mg twice a day2
    • Bones: broken shinbones united in 129 days on shilajit, against 153 days on placebo, in a trial of 160 adults5
    • How to take it: the trials used 200 mg to 1 gram a day, most often 250 mg twice a day with meals26
    • Choose it well: buy purified shilajit tested for heavy metals and microbes; the safety section covers who should skip it

To build the cellular-energy habits shilajit fits into, start with my free Mitochondrial Longevity Protocol.

In summer, high in the Himalayas, a dark, sticky resin seeps out of the rock.7 That resin is shilajit, a mix of humic substances, plant and microbial compounds and minerals, and traditional medicine in several countries has used it as a rejuvenator for thousands of years.1

Ayurvedic medicine calls it a rasayana, a rejuvenator that prevents illness and improves quality of life.8 Modern trials have started to test that reputation, and placebo-controlled results now cover testosterone, strength, bone and fracture healing.2345

On my show, I've described shilajit as a mineral-rich resin from Himalayan rock layers that carries fulvic acid, humic acid and trace minerals, with great benefits for most people, especially men with low testosterone.9

I am a fan of shilajit. I think it's a great supplement for a number of people.Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CNSFrom The Top 1% in Health Do THIS | Best Wellness Trends of 2025, The Dr. Josh Axe Show (2025), at 45:02

    What is shilajit?

    Quick answer

Shilajit is a pale brown to blackish brown resin that seeps from layers of rock in mountain ranges such as the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush, made mostly of humic substances, including fulvic acid, plus plant and microbial compounds and minerals.113 It's sold today as a resin, a powder and capsules.

Shilajit goes by many names: mumijo or mumie;145 momiai or moomiaii in Persian medicine;15 Zhaxun in Tibetan medicine;10 and mineral pitch or asphaltum in English.516 In Ayurveda it's described as a herbomineral, a substance with both plant and mineral roots.7

    Is shilajit a plant?

No. Shilajit is an exudate, a substance that oozes out of rock, and it forms in what researchers call the rock rhizosphere, where humic substances from plant and microbial life collect in the stone.1 How it forms is still debated: some researchers think it comes from plant remains that broke down over a very long time, and others think the rock itself slowly secretes it.13 In Tibet, it exudes from steep cliff faces, from cavities that rainwater can't reach.10

    Black shilajit and other colors

Shilajit ranges from pale brown to blackish brown, and its chemistry differs from one region to the next.113 The dark resin sold as black shilajit is the form in the picture above. Whatever the color, testing is what tells you how pure a product is, as the buying guide below explains.

    A short history of shilajit

Shilajit's use began with hill tribes in the mountains, and the Ayurveda and Siddha traditions of India came to call it a rasayana, the word for a rejuvenator.8 Classical Ayurvedic texts include it in 20 formulations.8 Persian physicians, Avicenna among them, called it moomiaii and used it especially for digestive problems and bone pain,15 and Tibetan medicine uses its water extract for what it calls heat-related syndromes of the stomach, liver and kidney.10 Traditional medicine in several countries also uses it as an adaptogen, a substance that helps the body handle stress.1

    What's in shilajit?

    Quick answer

More than 80% of shilajit's weight is humic substances, the family that includes fulvic and humic acids, and close to 20% is calcium, potassium and magnesium.13 It also carries amino acids, mainly glycine, plant compounds such as caffeic and gallic acids, and trace metals.13

I've also called shilajit an ancient superfood, one used often in Ayurvedic medicine.17 USDA FoodData Central has no record for shilajit, so its makeup comes from chemistry studies, and it varies from one source to the next.1312 Here's what those studies have found:

    ComponentWhat it isWhy it matters

    Fulvic acids

    Small, water-soluble humic compounds

The main active family; the purified extract in several human trials is standardized to at least 50% fulvic acids2

    Humic acids

    Larger humic compounds

Carry minerals: most of shilajit's metals sit in small humic-acid complexes under 10 kDa12

    Dibenzo-alpha-pyrones

    Small aromatic compounds

The trial extract is also standardized to at least 0.3% of these2

    Calcium, potassium and magnesium

    Major minerals

Close to 20% of its weight together13

    Trace elements

    Iron, zinc, manganese and others

    Amounts vary by source12

    Amino acids and plant acids

Mainly glycine; caffeic and gallic acids

    Part of its organic fraction13

That fulvic acid fraction is also sold on its own as a supplement, and the FAQ below explains how the two compare.

    What is shilajit good for?

Researchers are also exploring two traditional uses in early work: brain health, where lab studies and a small pilot in mild Alzheimer's disease tested fulvic acid and a formula of shilajit with B vitamins,24 and high altitude, where Indian defense researchers have proposed shilajit to help soldiers cope with altitude sickness and the strain of thin, cold mountain air.7

    How does shilajit work?

The research on how shilajit works centers on cellular energy. I group shilajit with Panax ginseng and holy basil as herbs for cellular energy: rich in fulvic acids and trace minerals, it supports nutrient transport, ATP production and overall cellular vitality.25 In the language of Chinese medicine, I describe it as replenishing qi, the body's vital energy, which you can think of as the cellular energy made in your mitochondria.9 Here's how the research traces that path:

1A resin rich in humic substances

Shilajit forms in high mountain rock as a dark resin made mostly of humic substances, with calcium, potassium, magnesium and trace minerals.1310

    2Fulvic acids lead the actives

The purified extract tested in several human trials is standardized to its fulvic acids and dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, small aromatic compounds.2

3Minerals travel in small carriers (proposed)

Most of shilajit's metals and minerals sit in small humic-acid complexes, and researchers propose that fulvic acid works as a carrier that moves nutrients into the tissues.127

4Mitochondria hold their charge (rat study)

Over 21 days of daily forced swimming, a model of chronic fatigue, rats given shilajit an hour before each swim kept the activity of the energy-making enzymes and the membrane charge of mitochondria in the brain, and their stress-hormone response steadied.23

5Strength and hormones respond in people

In placebo-controlled trials, men taking a purified extract kept more strength through exhausting leg exercise, and middle-aged men saw testosterone rise.32

Shilajit for men: testosterone, sperm and strength

    Quick answer

For men, shilajit's clearest result is testosterone: in a placebo-controlled trial of 96 men aged 45 to 55, 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day for 90 days raised total testosterone about 20% and free testosterone about 19%.2 A study with no comparison group found higher sperm counts, and a placebo-controlled trial found better strength through hard exercise.183

    Does shilajit increase testosterone?

The main trial ran at a government Ayurvedic medical college in Kolkata, India. Ninety-six healthy men aged 45 to 55, all with symptoms that can go with low testosterone, took 250 mg of a purified shilajit extract or a look-alike placebo twice a day after meals for 90 days; neither the men nor the researchers knew who got what, and 75 men finished.2 In those 75 men, total testosterone rose from 4.84 to 5.83 ng/mL on shilajit (484 to 583 ng/dL), about 20%, while the placebo group, which happened to start higher, drifted down from 5.82 to 4.45 ng/mL. Free testosterone rose about 19% on shilajit. DHEA-S, the storage form of DHEA, a hormone your body uses to make testosterone, rose about 31%, and LH, the brain signal that drives testosterone production, held steady.2

Two studies with no comparison group add to the picture. In 25 younger, healthy men with normal levels, 28 days of a shilajit resin left testosterone without a significant change, 394 ng/dL at the start and 383 ng/dL at the end,6 while in the 28 men with low sperm counts who finished a 90-day study, testosterone rose 23.5% on 100 mg of shilajit twice a day.18 And a 2024 systematic review of 52 studies covering 27 ingredients sold as testosterone boosters, which found that most don't raise testosterone, rated purified shilajit extract possibly effective for men with age-related low testosterone.26

When testosterone runs low, I look for the root causes first: insulin resistance, low vitamin D, low zinc, poor sleep and high cortisol. I'd put someone on a protocol before I'd put them on a pill: real food, strength training, sleep and filling those nutrient gaps, and only then, if testosterone is still low, testosterone at the lowest dose that works, which a physician may prescribe. Shilajit fits into that protocol as support for your body's own testosterone, and our guide to how to increase testosterone lays out the rest of the plan.

Blood markers to check alongside shilajit

Testosterone numbers mean the most beside the markers behind them, and the main shilajit trial ran 90 days, so a recheck after about three months shows whether your numbers are moving. Go over your results with a practitioner.

    • Total and free testosterone: How much testosterone you make, and how much is free to act on your tissues.
    • Vitamin D: One of the nutrients behind healthy testosterone. The optimal range is 50 to 80 ng/mL.
    • Fasting insulin: An early window on insulin resistance. The optimal range is 2 to 8 µIU/mL.

    Sperm health

Ayurveda has long credited shilajit with supporting male fertility, and one study set out to test that.18 Researchers at the same Kolkata college assessed 60 men for infertility and enrolled the 35 whose sperm counts were under 20 million per mL. The men took 100 mg of processed shilajit twice a day after meals for 90 days, the study had no comparison group, and 28 men finished.18 Their total sperm count rose 61.4%, semen volume rose 37.6%, sperm movement improved 12.4% to 17.4% at different checkpoints, and the share of normal-shaped sperm rose 18.9%. Semen MDA, a marker of oxidative stress, fell 18.7%, and the researchers found shilajit's compounds in the men's semen.18 For the rest of a fertility plan, zinc-rich foods and the steps in the testosterone section above are a good place to start.

Strength and recovery after hard exercise

A team at the University of Nebraska tested shilajit on strength. Sixty-three recreationally active men, about 21 years old, took 250 mg or 500 mg of purified shilajit a day or a placebo for 8 weeks, 21 men in each group. Before and after, they did two sets of 50 all-out leg extensions, 100 in all, and the researchers measured how much maximal strength they lost.3

Across all 63 men, the 500 mg group lost less strength than the 250 mg group, 9.1% against 15.7%. The clearest result came in the stronger half of the men, 10 in each group: on 500 mg a day they lost 8.9% of their strength, against 16.0% on placebo and 17.0% on 250 mg, while the 250 mg group and the placebo group lost about the same.3 In the half of the men who started with higher resting levels of hydroxyproline, a marker of collagen breakdown, 8 weeks on 500 mg brought it down to 1.5 µg/mL, against 2.4 µg/mL on 250 mg or placebo, and the authors read the results as favorable changes in both muscle and connective tissue.3

In the stronger men, 500 mg of shilajit a day cut strength loss after hard leg exercise to 8.9%

The same Nebraska lab then looked at collagen building directly. In a placebo-controlled trial of 35 recreationally trained men, 8 weeks of 500 or 1,000 mg of shilajit a day raised pro-c1α1, a blood marker of type 1 collagen synthesis, from 42.5 to 82.3 ng/mL and from 42.7 to 113.1 ng/mL, while the placebo group didn't change. On the higher dose, 75% of the men had a meaningful rise, against 30% on placebo.19 Type 1 collagen is an abundant structural protein in your skin, bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles, which is why these trials matter for anyone who trains hard.19 An earlier study with no placebo group pointed the same way: in 16 adults with overweight or mild obesity who took 250 mg twice a day for 8 weeks, muscle samples showed more activity in genes for collagen, elastin and other connective-tissue proteins.22 For more on bouncing back between workouts, see our guide to muscle recovery.

Shilajit for women: bone density, skin and sexual health

    Quick answer

For women, shilajit's trials cover bone, skin and sexual function: in a placebo-controlled trial of 60 women with osteopenia after menopause, a shilajit extract slowed bone loss at the spine and hip over 48 weeks.4 Separate placebo-controlled trials found better blood flow in the skin and higher sexual function scores.2021

    Bone density after menopause

Bone loss speeds up after menopause, driven in part by oxidative stress and inflammation, and a team at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences in India tested whether shilajit could slow it.4 Sixty women aged 45 to 65 with osteopenia, bone density that's lower than normal but not yet osteoporosis, took a placebo or 250 or 500 mg of a standardized shilajit extract every day for 48 weeks; neither the women nor the researchers knew who got what. Bone density at the lumbar spine and at the femoral neck of the hip fell steadily on placebo, while shilajit slowed that loss, more at the higher dose, and the difference from placebo was significant at 24 and 48 weeks.4 On both doses, blood markers of bone breakdown and turnover fell and OPG, a protein that protects bone, rose.4 A marker of oxidative stress and hs-CRP, a marker of inflammation, came down, and glutathione, one of your body's key antioxidants, went up.4 For the food side of strong bones, see our guide to the best foods for bone health.

    Skin

At Ohio State and Indiana University, researchers gave 45 healthy women aged 30 to 65 a placebo or 125 or 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day for 14 weeks in a placebo-controlled trial. At the higher dose, blood flow in the tiny vessels of the skin improved compared with both the women's starting point and placebo, and skin samples showed shilajit switching on genes for new blood vessels and for collagen; no side effects were reported.20 The collagen marker results in men, in the section above, point the same way.

    Sexual function

In Iran, 48 women of reproductive age took 200 mg shilajit tablets twice a day for 60 days or a placebo, and the women, the researchers and the analysts didn't know who got what; 43 women finished. Sexual function scores rose significantly on shilajit: at 90 days the average score was 28.92, against 22.09 on placebo, while sexual quality of life rose in both groups, without a significant difference between them.21 The authors concluded that shilajit may improve sexual function and most of its domains. For more natural ways to support desire, see our guide to how to increase libido.

None of the women's trials measured hormones, so for that side of the story, see our guide to testosterone for women.

Yes, in a placebo-controlled trial: broken shinbones united about 3 weeks sooner on shilajit than on placebo.5 Persian medicine has long used moomiaii for bone pain and bone repair,155 and a team at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran built a trial on that use. At three Tehran hospitals, 160 adults aged 18 to 60 with a new fracture of the tibia, the shinbone, took two 500 mg capsules of shilajit, called momiai there, or a placebo for 28 days after surgery; neither the patients nor the researchers knew who got what. X-rays showed the bone united in 129 days on average with shilajit, against 153 days on placebo, and side effects didn't differ between the groups.5

Shilajit for energy, fatigue and recovery

Shilajit's reputation as an energy booster now has early human support: in a 28-day study of 25 healthy men, fatigue scores fell by about a third. The men, aged 21 to 55 and moderately active, dissolved 250 mg of shilajit resin in about 200 mL of warm water, a little under a cup, and drank it twice a day with meals; the study had no comparison group, and the men knew what they were taking.6 Their fatigue scores fell about 32%, their ratings of how hard exercise felt fell about 24%, leg-press strength rose about 13%, and C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation, fell about 25%, from 2.88 to 2.15 mg/L.6

Shilajit also eased oxidative stress, the wear on your cells from free radical damage, in older adults with high blood pressure. In a randomized trial of 60 of them, in which people knew which treatment they got, adding 500 mg of shilajit twice a day to their blood pressure medicines for 30 days lowered MDA and oxidized LDL and raised total antioxidant capacity, the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase and glutathione, compared with medicines alone; arterial stiffness and blood vessel function didn't change.16 The antioxidant gains match what the bone trial in women and the sperm study in men measured.418

If you're always tired, shilajit belongs on top of the basics that rebuild energy at the cellular level: sleep, daily movement and real food, the same foundation the Mitochondrial Longevity Protocol builds.

    Shilajit, fulvic acid and detox

Shilajit is a natural source of humic and fulvic acid.1713 I'm a huge fan of humic and fulvic acid, along with high-dose probiotics, and I count them among the best detoxifiers.27 A 2024 review of the research found that the humic substances in shilajit help detoxify around 12 heavy metals by binding them, mostly from chemistry and lab work, though the authors add that the detox data still need clarifying.11

In a heavy metal detox, humic and fulvic acid are taken like any binder, two hours away from food, other supplements and medications, which is a different schedule from the with-meals shilajit doses in the trials. Our guide lays out the full plan, from lowering your exposure to supporting glutathione. Gentle binders such as chlorella work on the same schedule.

How to take shilajit: resin, powder, capsules and dosage

    Quick answer

The human trials used 200 mg to 1 gram of shilajit a day, most often 500 mg a day taken as 250 mg twice a day with meals, for 4 to 48 weeks; no official dose has been set.218196 For testosterone, plan on about 90 days, the length of the main trial.2

These are the amounts used in the human trials, by goal:

For everyday use, the amount tested most is a good place to land: 500 mg a day of a purified extract or resin, split into 250 mg with breakfast and 250 mg with lunch or dinner.26 The trials gave shilajit with or after meals, so take it with food.2186 No study has compared times of day, so pick the two meals that fit your routine, and give it 8 to 12 weeks before you judge the results: the strength and collagen trials ran 8 weeks and the testosterone trial 90 days.3192

    Resin, powder, capsules or gummies?

Shilajit comes in four main forms, and the trials used the first three:

    • Resin. The sticky, purified form closest to the raw material. Weigh or scoop out 250 mg as the label directs, and dissolve it in about 200 mL of warm water or tea, as the 28-day resin study did.6

    • Powder. A dried extract that stirs into warm water, tea or a smoothie. Measure it by the label's serving.

    • Capsules. A measured dose without the taste; the testosterone trial used capsules of a purified extract.2

    • Gummies. No trial has tested them, so check how much shilajit each serving carries against the 250 mg doses in the trials, and how much added sugar comes with it.

Shilajit tastes strong and earthy, so warm tea works well with the resin and powder. If you'd rather stir it into something creamier, use goat milk or coconut milk.

How to choose a purified, tested shilajit

Shilajit is collected from rock, and its makeup varies from source to source, so the product you choose matters as much as the dose.1312 Federal rules require supplement makers to set specifications for each ingredient's identity, purity, strength and composition, including limits on contamination.28 A certificate of analysis from an outside lab is how a company shows you it met them. Check the label and the company's lab report for these:

    • Purified or standardized, with its fulvic acid content stated; the trial products listed at least 50% to 60% fulvic acids26

    • Tested for heavy metals, including lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury11

    • Tested for microbes and mold toxins, the way the resin in the 28-day energy study was checked for microbial load, aflatoxins (toxins made by molds), pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons6

    • Made under FDA supplement manufacturing rules, which require limits on contaminants for every ingredient28

    • A clear amount per serving, so you can match the 250 mg doses in the trials2

Shilajit side effects, safety and who should skip it

    Quick answer

Shilajit was well tolerated in the human trials that tracked side effects, which were mild when they happened, over 4 to 14 weeks.652018

In the 28-day resin study, 7 of the 25 men had mild side effects that passed on their own, such as acne, a rash, itching or indigestion, and their lab safety tests stayed stable.6 In the fracture trial, side effects were no more common on shilajit than on placebo; in the 14-week skin trial, none were reported; and in the 90-day sperm study, liver and kidney tests didn't change.52018 I've found that shilajit may not agree with some people who have weak digestion or loose stools, and if you have digestive distress, you may not want to take it.9

    Raw shilajit and heavy metals

Shilajit comes out of the rock with whatever the rock holds. A 2024 review counted around 65 metals reported in shilajit, including lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury; most reported levels sat below WHO and FDA limits, but a few studies found levels above them.11 Samples of shilajit produced in India and Pakistan tested above permissible limits for several metals, including lead and arsenic, and only the Indian samples carried mercury,30 while a 2026 analysis of 12 samples from different regions found toxic metals below established thresholds.12 Raw material can carry other contaminants too: in Tibet, the black paste is collected mixed with the droppings of small mountain animals.10 Studies of raw shilajit haven't looked for mold toxins, but the purified resin in the 28-day energy study was tested for aflatoxins, toxins made by molds, and for microbes, and came in within accepted safety limits, so ask for a lab report that covers them along with metals.6 That's why purification and testing matter, and the buying checklist above shows what to look for.

Who should skip shilajit or ask first

Good to know before you take shilajit
    • Pregnancy and nursing: skip it. There's no safety data, and in one documented case, a pregnant woman who had taken mumijo for 6 months developed high blood pressure and low potassium, treated with potassium and by stopping the mumijo.14

    • Children: skip it; no trial has tested shilajit in children.

    • Kidney disease: use shilajit only if your kidney specialist agrees, since it's rich in potassium, calcium and magnesium.13

    • Iron overload (hemochromatosis): check with your practitioner first. Shilajit carries iron, and at very high doses in rats it raised iron in the liver.1231

    • Allergic reaction: stop at the first hives, swelling or trouble breathing, and get emergency care. In one case report, shilajit was a possible trigger of exercise-related anaphylaxis in a woman with a possible mast cell disorder.32

    The bottom line

    Should you take shilajit?

For many adults, yes, especially men looking for support with testosterone, strength and energy, and women after menopause who want to protect their bones. Shilajit is a mineral-rich resin that traditional medicine has prized as a rejuvenator for thousands of years, and I give that long record real weight, because it reflects generations of people paying attention to what helped them. In placebo-controlled trials, a purified extract raised testosterone in middle-aged men, helped men keep strength through hard exercise and slowed bone loss after menopause, and shilajit sped the healing of broken shinbones.

The trials most often used 500 mg a day of a purified extract or resin, taken as 250 mg twice a day with meals, so that's a good place to start; give it 8 to 12 weeks, or about 90 days for testosterone. Buy only products tested for heavy metals and microbes. Then build the foundation it works best on: sleep, strength training and real food. As the Mitochondrial Longevity Protocol explains, supplements give your cells the raw materials, and movement, fasting and sleep send the signals that put them to work.33 Do that, and this ancient resin becomes one more simple way to support the energy your body was designed to make.

    Shilajit: frequently asked questions

    What is shilajit good for?

Shilajit's best-supported uses are testosterone and strength in men and bone in women: in placebo-controlled trials, a purified extract raised total testosterone about 20% in men aged 45 to 55 and slowed bone loss over 48 weeks in women with osteopenia.24 Other trials point to faster fracture healing, collagen building and better blood flow in the skin,51920 and studies with no comparison group found higher sperm counts and less fatigue.186

    Does shilajit really work?

Yes, for several uses tested in people: in placebo-controlled trials it raised testosterone in middle-aged men, helped men keep strength through hard exercise, slowed bone loss after menopause and sped the healing of broken shinbones.2345 Those results came from shilajit taken daily for 4 to 48 weeks, mostly purified extracts, so the product you choose matters.

    Does shilajit increase testosterone?

Yes, in middle-aged men: in a placebo-controlled trial of 96 men aged 45 to 55, 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day for 90 days raised total testosterone about 20% and free testosterone about 19%.2 A 2024 systematic review rated purified shilajit extract possibly effective for men with age-related low testosterone.26

What are the benefits of shilajit for men?

For men, shilajit has raised testosterone and a collagen-building marker and helped men keep strength through exhausting exercise in placebo-controlled trials; in the 90-day trial of men aged 45 to 55, total testosterone rose about 20%.2193 Sperm counts rose too, in a study with no comparison group.18 The men's section covers each one.

What are the benefits of shilajit for women?

For women, shilajit has slowed bone loss after menopause, improved blood flow in the skin and raised sexual function scores in placebo-controlled trials of 60, 45 and 48 women.42021

How much shilajit should I take a day?

The trials used 200 mg to 1 gram a day, most often 500 mg a day as 250 mg twice a day with meals; no official dose has been set.218196 For testosterone, the main trial ran 90 days.2

When is the best time to take shilajit?

Take it with meals, such as breakfast and lunch: the trials gave it with or after meals, split into two doses.2186 No study has compared times of day, so pick the two meals that fit your routine.

How long does it take for shilajit to work?

Plan on 8 to 12 weeks: the strength and collagen results showed up at 8 weeks and the testosterone rise at 90 days, while the bone density results took 24 to 48 weeks.31924

Is shilajit safe to take every day?

Yes, at the amounts tested: trials gave shilajit every day for 4 to 48 weeks,456 and in the ones that reported side effects, over 4 to 14 weeks, they were mild when they happened.5620 Choose a purified product tested for heavy metals, and skip it during pregnancy and while nursing.

What are the side effects of shilajit?

Side effects in trials were mild, such as acne, a rash or indigestion in 7 of 25 men in a 28-day study with no comparison group, and they passed on their own.6 It may not agree with people who have weak digestion or loose stools, and rare case reports describe high blood pressure with low potassium in a pregnant woman and a possible role in an allergic reaction.91432

    Do shilajit gummies work?

No trial has tested gummies themselves, but a gummy that delivers about 250 mg of purified shilajit per serving matches the doses used in the trials.26 Check how much shilajit each serving carries and how much added sugar comes with it.

Is shilajit resin better than capsules?

Both forms have human data: the testosterone trial used capsules of a purified extract, and the 28-day energy study used purified resin dissolved in warm water.26 Choose the form you'll take every day, as long as it's purified and tested.

Is shilajit good for your kidneys?

Shilajit didn't harm the kidneys in the trials that checked: kidney tests stayed normal in 28 men who took it for 90 days, and lab safety tests stayed stable in 25 men over 28 days, in two studies without a comparison group.186 If you have kidney disease, use it only if your kidney specialist agrees, since it's rich in potassium, calcium and magnesium.13

Can you take shilajit with ashwagandha?

Yes, you can take them together, each at its own amount: shilajit at 250 mg twice a day with meals, as in the trials,2 and ashwagandha at 600 mg a day, the amount I recommend, as 300 mg twice a day. Both come from Ayurveda, and no trial has paired them, so add one at a time and see how you feel.

Shilajit vs. fulvic acid: what's the difference?

Fulvic acid is one part of shilajit: shilajit is the whole resin, mostly humic substances including fulvic and humic acids, plus minerals and other compounds, while a fulvic acid supplement concentrates that one fraction.13 The human trials on this page tested shilajit itself, and our fulvic acid guide covers the fraction on its own.

    What does shilajit taste like?

Shilajit has a strong, earthy taste, so the resin and powder go down easiest dissolved in about a cup of warm water or tea, the way one trial gave it, and capsules skip the taste altogether.6
