DIY Wart Remover with Apple Cider Vinegar & Essential Oils

DIY wart remover

Are you looking for a natural way to remove a wart? Oddly, it seems that some people are more susceptible than others, a fact that dermatologists are still trying to understand. Meanwhile, children are more likely to encounter warts since their immune defenses have not built up like an adult.

Regardless, it’s important to know that you can get warts simply by touching a wart on someone else’s body or by touching items that have been in contact with a wart such as a towel.

But while you can go to the dermatologist to have them removed, it isn’t necessary and can be costly. Read on to learn how to get rid of your wart at home using this DIY wart remover remedy.

What Is a Wart?

A wart is a small, typically hard, benign growth on the skin that’s caused by a virus. They are usually found on fingers, hands, elbows and the knee area — areas where the skin is more likely to have blemishes or be broken.

If you have broken skin of any sort, warts have a much easier entry point and are more likely to develop. Warts take form by causing infections when the virus comes in contact with your skin.

How to Make a DIY Wart Remover

In a small dish, add the apple cider vinegar, which contains both useful acid and probiotics. The acid goes after the wart, and with a little patience, will help it to fall right off of the skin. While the vinegar does not affect the virus that caused the wart in the first place, much, if not all of the virus, may be eliminated from within the wart, once removed.

Now, add the oregano, frankincense and lemon essential oils. Oregano oil contains carvacrol and thymol, which have beneficial antiviral properties. These properties help make this DIY wart remover truly work.

Frankincense essential oil offers assistance to the wart removal process because it’s a natural antiseptic and disinfectant. Lemon oil also assists because of its powerful d-limonene content. D-limonene has the ability to fight inflammation due to the antioxidants it provides.

To finish, add the coconut oil. Coconut oil has antimicrobial and antifungal properties that can help diminish the wart. Ideally, use fractionated coconut oil so it stays liquidy at any temperature. Coconut oil provides a base for the other ingredients so that the essential oils don’t evaporate, but rather seep into the skin and hit the wart more deeply. Once you have added the coconut oil, make sure to mix well.

How to Apply

Now that all ingredients are blended for your DIY wart remover remedy, gently clean the affected area. Then, take a clean cotton ball and lightly dip it into the mixture. Squeeze out a little of the excess so that it does not drip, but not all so that the cotton ball is mostly saturated with the mixture. Place the cotton ball on top of the wart, then gently cover with a bandage.

You may want to use a larger bandage so that the cotton ball stays clean and in place. Apply this bandage in the morning and another fresh one at night.

Wear as long as possible and continue the process until the wart has diminished or fallen off the skin. This usually takes a few days. However, it’s painless, natural and way cheaper than having it removed by the doctor.

It is important to note that you should not use oregano oil on genital warts since that is a very sensitive area. Instead, you can use frankincense and tea tree oil combined with coconut oil and gently rub onto the affected area.

THIS WORKS!!! I made some in 2017 and used it on my 7 year old son to remove a wart on his hand and it worked. I then gave the remains to my sister in law for my nephew and it removed a wart off his foot. Fast forward to 2022, I realized a bump on left shoulder was a wart, the size of the nail bed of my little finger. I used this and 10 days later it is gone. So glad I am able to get rid of these with completely natural ingredients. Thank you!

Used this to remove a plantar wart. Didn’t have frankincense at the time so used just lemon and oregano essential oils. But this worked! Relief within a few hours and healed by about two weeks.

Hi, I once read about a method to apply herbal remedies or essential oils to the penis, called a penile or penis soak. I will quote this for reference: “James Green in “The Male Herbal” (The Crossing Press) recommends using a penis soak for the male genitals, to avoid passing genital infections back and forth between male and female partners. Green attributes the origins of this therapy to Cascade Anderson Geller. ” It says that to perform a penis soak, you hold a drinking glass, vase or jar filled with the herbal remedy/essential oils and hang in there for about 5-10 minutes. (If you are not circumcised, you should retract the foreskin throughout the soak). An alternate method is the sitz bath, consisting of filling a small basin or plastic tub with the remedy and sitting in it.

So for applying this particular remedy, you would add enough water to cover the penis, the apple cider vinegar (1/2 teaspoon) and 1 drop each of the essential oils (exclude the coconut oil because it would not dissolve in the water). Disperse the oils well in the water and soak for 10 minutes at least once a day, but preferably 2 to 3 times a day.

is there a link between warts (anywhere) and cold sores (on the lips),

I heard parasites are not good they cause viruses to escalate and there pooh is not good.

    Reply
      • Jody on

Sorry but they are absolutely NOT the same virus. I have studied and worked in the field of medical sciences.

Warts are caused by Human Papilloma Virus or HPV.
Cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex Virus or HSV.

I know of no link, I have warts but have never had a cold sore or genital herpes (also caused by HSV) either.

I really don’t understand what you’re trying to say about parasites, Richard.
“there pooh”??? Their poo? Parasites poo? I wasn’t aware they did poo. I wouldn’t think parasites in the GI tract, if you even have any – they’re rare especially if you haven’t visited third world countries, would have any effect on skin viruses.

I’ve just made this treatment. I have put in a small roller bottle. How long will it last and should keep in in a cool place?

    Reply
    • Jody on

I don’t think I’d use a roller ball to apply, you’d contaminate the oil mixture with wart virus. Although on second thoughts maybe you’re just using that to apply to cotton wool? I’ve kept it beside my oven for around 4 years, probably not the ideal place but that was some place I’d see it daily and remember to use it. Also later was out of reach of my toddler. Just used it this week and it still feels effective, wart is tingling as we speak, aftrr two days application.

I have Genital warts and now a planters wart as well. I’ve had the genital warts for about 5 years and have had conventional acid treatment from doctors which are painful and they always come back. I would like to try this method however I’m not sure how I would bandage cotton in my genital area? Has anyone had success with this? If so please tell me how you managed to pull this off

    • Ana on

Hi, assuming you are refering to the vagina, you can try doing a sitz bath, using water and adding the same proportions of each ingredient (excluding the coconut oil since it wouldn’t dilute in water). You can also apply a more diluted mixture directly to the affected area. It needs to be more diluted because genitals are much more delicate than other areas. So you would use 1 tablespoon -or 1/2 oz- coconut oil (instead of 1/4 tsp) and the indicated amounts of essential oils in the recipe.

      Reply
    • Ana on

According Dr. Axe: “For external genital warts, you can paint the warts with liquid vitamin A or beta-carotene once or twice daily. For best results, also add three to four drops each of thuja, echinacea and lomatium tinctures. Don’t use for internal genital warts, and absolutely do not use genital treatments of any kind without first consulting your doctor if you’re pregnant. Essentials oils can also be used to naturally treat warts. Some of the most popular choices for fighting warts include tea tree, oregano, lemon, thyme and eucalyptus. For plantar warts, make a blend of one drop each oregano and frankincense with a bit of coconut oil. Apply this mix topically two to three times per day directly on the wart and surrounding area for two to four weeks or until the wart is gone. Continue application after the wart is gone for one week to avoid recurrence.
For genital warts, use frankincense oil with tea tree (melaleuca) oil and apply in the same manner. Continue to use the oil treatment even after warts are gone to make sure they don’t come back. Use a clean Q-tip to apply oils each time to prevent spreading.”

Thank you. This makes sense and I will certainly try it if my current method doesn’t work. I’ve had a finger wart for around 5 years, tried everything on it. I even knocked it off in the doorway after freezing with dry ice at work, blood pouring out, still grew back. Finally I feel like I’m having success with ACV overnight on a cotton ball, and a proprietary mix of essential oils similar to yours (lemon, tea-tree, thuja) and homeopathy (which I don’t really believe in) applied a few times a day to uncovered wart. So yes I really think your method will work, and it would be a lot cheaper, so thanks for sharing. But for now I still have most of a bottle of the other one, and my wart is getting blackish after just a few days.

Wart is back again, only now it’s a cluster. I did try this remedy, but then I got pregnant and stopped all except apple cider vinegar because I didn’t want to risk anything after 7 years of fertility treatment and two losses, that pregnancy being my last embryo, and I couldn’t find for sure that it was safe. Also it was hard to apply twice a day before that as I was working long hours, nights, weekends, and on call.

I remember being worried my two year old nephew would catch my wart because he kept holding my hand by that finger, he’s now about to turn ten! Time for this wart to go! I’m sick of it, tried absolutely everything now. I even had it frozen with liquid nitrogen at the doctor’s office. It fell off, two weeks later it was back. I can’t afford $20 every two weeks to get rid of it, not even knowing if that would work, so I’m revisiting the above method. I’m a student again so hours are a lot more conducive to regular application. I plan to apply morning and night like the method says. It has been two days and again it feels promising, wart is not happy under that bandage.

We’ve removed many warts and several seborrheic keratosis with nothing but apple cider vinegar on band aids. The object is to keep all light and air off of the wart or seborrheic keratosis so as to suffocate it. Don’t change the band aid for a week. Just put more apple cider vinegar on it using a cotton ball or just pour it on to saturate the band aid. After a week, take the band aid off and see if the wart or seborrheic keratosis falls off with the band aid. Take a cotton ball and rub gently to loosen it. If it didn’t come completely off, take another band aid soaked in apple cider vinegar and do the same process again for another week. There probably won’t be, but If there is any scar, it will usually be gone in a month. You can also remove warts and seborrheic keratosis with nothing but duck tape but it might hurt when taking it off. Remember…. you want to block all light and suffocate the warts and seborrheic keratosis.

Didn’t work for me. I thought it was gone and then it came straight back, and it was very painful throughout. ACV does not kill the wart virus. I think it’s working now though, using the same ACV covered overnight, then uncovered with a mix of essential oils including thuja during the day, I guess the virus is finally being killed. This is a wart I have had for five years and got rid of several times, have just about tried everything, including ACV covered for days as per your method, and essential oils. Now finally it is starting to blacken, never had that before. I think the only way is to combine methods as they’ve done here.

      Reply
    • Jody on

That’s an entirely different method. This one you apply night and morning, and the essential oils help kill the virus, it is not a suffocation method. This method is more advanced. Most of us here have probably already tried the other methods too, we’re here as a last resort, sourcing frankincense oil seems pretty last resort to me, and wasn’t all that easy but I did it.

Apple cider vinegar method as you describe was not at all effective for me, neither were duct tape, liquid nitrogen, dry ice, TCA, salicylate, wart freeze solution, etc, etc. I also can’t possibly imagine there will be no scar, no matter the method, as my wart has been with me off and on (but mostly on) for maybe 10 years now. I also can’t imagine anyone caring about a scar, if their wart is finally gone for good, I certainly won’t care about that.

Chose not to use while pregnant, as my last IVF embryo and had other complications like Hyperemesis and a really bad employer, but my wart worsened. Had it frozen off by the nurse 6 months ago, started growing back two weeks later, now I have a cluster of 4-5 warts on my finger. Am trying this method again, as I think it would work, I just couldn’t apply it regularly enough but it appeared to be starting to work last time.

For cervical cancer? I wouldn’t think so. Hope you decided against it, and saw a doctor instead to treat/cure the cancer. Please don’t use this, it appears it’s only for external warts, which whilst being a major annoyance it doesn’t matter if you don’t get rid of them you just try something else. Cancer on the other hand, if home treatment doesn’t work, it’s life threatening.

instead of “oregano essential oil” i have used “Tea tree essential oil”.

First I didnt follow to put the cotton ball on wart and cover it with bandage. I just apply on top of it for almost 5 days but i didnt see any result.

then i thought to myself let me that i should follow the exact instructions. then i did what u have explained and O MY GOD,

after on day the warts became white and then the second day they became black and when i have checked the third day they were completely gone.

I was sooooo worried about it for almost two years coz i did my cautery and then they came back but now also following the diet. i dont have it anymore.

I am really really thankful to you for sharing such important and valuable home remedy.

Maybe could use a bandaid? It has a cotton pad that could be soaked with the solution? Or an actual small piece of gauze, telfa pad, etc, soak and cover with the bandaid ( maybe waterproof if necessary) or medical tape. Some commentors have even used duct tape to keep the solution on their warts.

      • Jody on

I fairly easily found everything on the internet to make the above recipe, I think the frankincense was the hardest. I have had tea tree oil for years, it’s never been hard to find, I’d probably use NZ ti/tea tree oil (manuka) personally having seen studies years ago showing a more potent effect than with the more commonly used Australian Tea Tree (melaleuca). Actually I currently have a combo oil of the two, which would probably work well here. Although I’ll admit I don’t know a lot about essential oils, but I have studied and worked many years in microbiology, and I feel that manuka has a more broad spectrum effect.

I used regular, couldn’t find my fractionated, but it goes solid on top under 15⁰C. I think it would be much better with fractionated. I store in a childproof glass medicine bottle and gently warm it in warm water before use with lid on.

I’m thinking so. The skin immediately next to the wart is likely to burn a little. Like they say, you can’t make an omelette without breaking some eggs. Is that even relevant haha? You can’t get rid of a wart without affecting the skin around it surely, as there’ll be some of the solution spilling over. Mine has certainly been quite painful the 20 or so times I’ve removed it over the years. This treatment certainly burns a bit, probably mostly the apple cider vinegar, as I recall ACV alone to treat my wart was really quite painful. However the colleague who told me about it said it wasn’t too painful, so I guess results do vary, although I don’t think her warts were particularly established like my 6 year one. I think I have a high pain threshold, I was in labour for 1.5 days before I asked for any pain relief, but at times with ACV only I was barely able to use my finger. I guess the roots were deep. This treatment actually seems a lot less painful than most others, I think I tried them all, except for the immunotherapy pills I don’t think I can get in my country short of having cancer.

You could use avocado oil, relying on the essential oils to get rid of the wart virus. I think the coconut oil is just because it has additional properties useful to getting rid of warts. https://draxe.com/nutrition/coconut-oil-benefits/ See particularly number 6.

    • Jody on

I had lost my fractionated oil which is liquid even in winter when I was going to make this, so I just used regular coconut cooking oil. With this remedy if it’s below 25⁰C in the room and it has solidified on top, I put the bottle into warm water just over body temperature and it soon melts. Then I shake well and apply. I think it has maintained integrity, I keep the lid on while warming very gently so the volatile oils cannot escape, and I’m using it now 4 years later and still feels like it’s working although it’s been only two days.

Should be common knowledge for a doctors website…oregano oil is an antibiotic so therefore it CANNOT work on a virus. Up above it states that oregano oil works on viruses because it is an antiobiotic. This is absolutely not true, and should be corrected.

    Reply
  32. D on

It’s incorrect to say that if something is an antibiotic that therefore makes it good for fighting a virus. You lose credibility if you say something that’s obviously wrong.

    Reply
    • Jody on

      Penicillin is an antibiotic.

Oregano oil is not, I understand it has antimicrobial properties, which I don’t think have been misrepresented here. Antimicrobial meaning it has been shown to have some effect against microbes, which could include fungi, bacteria, viruses, prions? Antimicrobial effect can imply a wide range of effects, not necessarily killing 100%, which indeed most (many?) antibiotics will not do anyway.

Where does it say oregano oil is an antibiotic, I don’t ever remember reading that here. Even if it had been when I originally read this article 5 years ago, pretty sure I would’ve remembered as I know full well essential oils are not an antibiotic. Still if I had a wart I’d tried everything else on, I wouldn’t care, I’d suck up what I as a scientist know about antibiotics, try it anyway and see for myself if it works. It’s not like cancer or smallpox where you might die if you use a treatment that isn’t effective, its just a wart. I do have a wart (now it’s a cluster) that resisted treatment over years, grows back worse each time, so I tried it. Feels like it was working, but I was working long hours, night shifts and on call at the time so timing was hard. Now I work better hours as a mum and a student, so am revisiting.

I added tea tree and this totally worked. I have photos and everything. It was just a couple of weeks before the virus was obviously dead, then it took another 6 weeks or so before I was able to easily pick the wart off in layers. Now I have smooth skin on my hand again.

Dr. Axe, I am sorry that I misplaced your contact info and just now found it. I hope. I would really like to learn about essential oil healing and how to get certified. I messed up big time today.
I got your text earlier on my phone but don t know how to do the SMS thingy. I got to use my iPad for cruising the web.

my oldest had a wart just pop up . so what we are doing is putting teatree oil & covering it @ all times you cant let these buggers breath. as you get closer to the root its going to hurt, it will take a few weeks for it to go away. i change it once a week wash the area really good, use sandpaper to sand it off a bit but not too much otherwise it may bleed than put a dab on that area than take about 1/4 of a cotton ball had a few drops of teatree oil cover it with duct tape & keep it dry as possible . it does work give it some time to do the work.

Thank you for the DIY wart treatment. You do not mention the ratios when putting the ingredients together. Can you share what those are?

I would just like to point out that if a wart is a virus, the antibacterial properties of the oils do not affect the virus. Antibiotics do not work on viruses so that is misinformation. I am waiting for my oils to arrive to try this as I know others who have had great success with oregano removing skin tags especially.

I recommend having the doctor look at a wart on the soles of the feet. Warts can spread if not removed completely and it could get bad. When my 50 yr old son was 20 he had many deep, big warts on his feet and because he’s on his feet all the time the warts grew inward. He waited too long to get help and they grew really deep. After 3 surgeries he gave up and went to cortisone steroid shots in his feet. They shrank the warts but come back. And the steroids destroyed most of the fat from the soles so by bedtime he can hardly stand or stand the pain.

Steroid shots for warts? Seems to me they’d just encourage the virus to grow. Shame he didn’t find a good cure. Maybe he can try this now if the warts are still there. I have arthritis in my feet, so I know how hard it is to be in pain while standing or walking. My doctor was no use, and I only have one wart. Just gave me high strength salicylic acid, even though I told her I’d had it three years and tried lots of other treatments. The salicylate really hurt and was the least effective treatment I have tried. TCA is much more effective, and available over the counter, although the wart still grew back even with TCA.
