Anti-Inflammatory Juice Recipe with Pineapple - Dr. Axe

Anti-Inflammatory Juice Recipe

Anti-inflammatory juice recipe - Dr. Axe

We now know that most diseases today are due to inflammation. (1) Inflammation damages your cells and arterials walls and can cause all kinds of problems, including chronic inflammatory conditions like cardiovascular diseases and arthritis. (2)

By reducing inflammation, your body is better able to heal from disease. One of the top ways to decrease inflammation is to follow The Healing Foods Diet and consume plenty of anti-inflammatory foods.

If you’re looking for anti-inflammatory diet recipes or anti-inflammatory juices for arthritis, this delicious drink I’m about to share with you has you covered on both fronts. This anti-inflammatory juice recipe is the perfect blend to help support your body’s natural defenses and reduce inflammation — plus, it’s absolutely delicious!

Key Ingredients

Some of the best natural anti-inflammatory drinks come in the form of fresh juices. Juicing for inflammation and weight loss are very popular these days, but it’s very important that you choose the right combination of foods. Anti-inflammatory fruit juice can be healthy, but a fresh juice that includes vegetables such as cucumbers and celery is even better in my book because it’s typically much lower in sugar!

Pineapple is definitely one of my favorite anti-inflammatory which is why I made sure to include it in this recipe. You’ve probably heard about the benefits of pineapple and pineapple juice for inflammation thanks to its high bromelain content. (3Ginger is another ingredient shown by scientific research to possess potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can even help to decrease muscle pain after an intense workout. (4)

Anti-inflammatory juice recipe - Dr. Axe

Why include green apple in this juice recipe? Aside from its delicious flavor, like pineapple, it’s also a rich source of quercetin, a natural antihistamine and an anti-inflammatory. Low-sugar lemon is also added. In studies using animal models, extracts of lemon peel have been shown to decrease inflammation related to arthritis. (5) So when you’re making this juice, I highly recommend using the whole lemon, peel and all!

If you’re looking to make a smoothie anti-inflammatory, you can include some of the fruits and veggies I use here.

I tried the juice and can see how beneficial it must be. My only comment is that the lemon peel made it very bitter. If I make it again, I’d probably wouldn’t add it – or at least, not all of it.

  9. Quynh on

How does one test that a juice is really antiinflammatory versus the fiber of the vegetables/fruit as being antiinflammatory? I’ve seen other articles mention that juicing, breaking the cells of these fruits and vegetables destroy the benefit of having fiber strands laying down in the stomach to protect gut acid and prevents sugar spike and insulin rise in your system. Obviously you can’t eat as many fruits as you can in a juice drink. What is a reasonable amount of juice? Long term, is juicing really good for people who are trying to lose weight and control insulin? Does this dumping of juice in the morning cause more crashing and craving of carbs later in the day from insulin spike?

    • Jim on

I don’t see how this particular recipe would make you worry about dumping/crashing/insulin. It’s very low in sugar. If this had strawberries, bananas, mangoes, pears, grapes, etc then I’d worry.

    • Christine on

Excellent question, thank you for putting it together and asking about it! It is so difficult to wade through all of the information available… and the options and opinions of one doctor/specialist to the next. The older I get, the more information I gather. I sometimes run into a wall and want to throw up my hands in defeat. Struggling to get myself back together after brain surgery, as well as black mold exposure, the latter of which I feel has caused a great deal of issue for me. Thank you for the advice on healthy nutrition.

I am new to this. My partner has throat cancer and is alkalining his body. The juices are what I need to give him and I had thought of making a batch to keep in the fridge but some say to be consumed immediately. Would they not work if stored in the fridge?

    • Michele on

I make two weeks of juice at a time and freeze them. One bottle takes 2 days to thaw. I start out with two juices in the fridge. As I drink one, I replace it with one out of the freezer. As a testimony, I tore my meniscus in my knee and had been wearing a knee brace every day for six months. After two weeks of drinking this juice, I was able to take the knee brace off and haven’t needed it since.

      • Emma Fernyhough on

That’s good to know. Do you just make a batch ? How much do you double it by to have enough for two weeks. ? I hurt my back and can’t take anti inflammatories so would like to try this.

    • Christine Friesenhahn on

A nurse friend of mine makes enough for 4 days at once and they are fine. Any doubt was erased when she went three days without on vacation and didn’t take her juicer…after the 3rd day she couldn’t walk.

    • Deborah Wood on

Please never freeze energetic juices! Your body requires the frequency/ vibration to heal especially in acid/cancer situations.

Thank you for sharing this helpful information on juicing to lessen inflammation in the body. I am following the instructions and taking one day at a time. I believe this will help me tremendously inorder to lessen my arthritis pain in my knees and lower back. I am monitoring my blood pressure, and taking my vitamins and minerals. Eventually I hope after the weight loss my doctor may take me off the blood pressure medication.

Good Question…I was wondering the same thing. Have decided to take a juice fast this weekend to cleanse from statin drug my doctor prescribed and absolutely inflamed my joints. I’m going to just juice instead of eating solid foods as I want this stuff out of my system, but if you’re just juicing for the healthy benefits you can add it to your already healthy diet, I believe.

Too high in carbs. My diabetes would react. My inflammation would show signs of minimal reaction.

    Good evening,

I don’t have a juicer yet. I use a ninja mixer. Does the pulpy drink still have the same effects as using a juicer?

Thanks for all that you do in the name of health and wellness!

    • taylor on

Juicer removes the fiber which allows you to digest said juices instantly into your blood stream, where smoothies take time to digest. It allows you to pack more nutrients, where blending lets say all of those would make a pretty thick smoothie. Highly recommend getting a juicer

  21. Cathie on

I’m very interested in trying this recipe. I see that it calls for the pineapple. Is that the tidbits? Also, could I just use ginger powder instead of the knob of ginger? Thank you.

  22. Nancy on

Can you just add everything together in a juicer or do you have to prep the items first? Assuming you need to remove the peel on the lemon? pineapple needs to have the core removed and outside skin? Apple cored?

    • Rachel on

Lemon peel doesn’t have to be removed. I would remove the skin from the pineapple but not 100% certain if it’s necessary. Apple peel is fine but you do want to make sure the seeds of the apple are removed. They contain amygdalin which can be harmful.

    • Tina on

Why are they not responding to our questions,,, no need to peel anything, even the lemon, the rind is very good for you, ill reply to yous ,i see no one is replying

This recipe looks really appealing. I’ve got suspected osteoarthritis in my shoulder and wrist (Early onset at 35yrs young). Just trying to work out the serving suggestion. It says 1x but yield is then 2.

Thank you for this recipe, which we tried this morning and loved! Feeling really full too, so skipping lunch thanks to it.

    I have two questions please:
Any recommendation for a clinic/ practitioner in the UK please?
Is this juice good for children (11 and 13 years old)? If so, how much and how often is good for them?

    • Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN on

Hi Katy … not sure about a UK clinic or practitioner. If you live near London, here’s one worth checking out:

You can also find a naturopath by using this site:

This drink can work for children, though if they’re not used to much fiber they may run to the bathroom, ha. I’d recommend that you serve the drink with half a sandwich or something chewable.

  27. Crystal Lee Rose on

I am allergic to pineapple and don’t know what 1 knob Ginger means, plus the carbs and sugar are way too much for a Diabetic type 2 person.

  28. Lisa on

Does the pineapple have to be fresh? I live in Eastern Canada and fresh pineapples are difficult to find. Could I use frozen pineapple and just let it thaw before I put it in my juicer? Actually, in the winter all fresh fruits and veggies are impossible to find. Frozen seems to be my best or only option.

    Hi Dr. Axe,
I have been overloaded with medications for many yrs. for a neurological disorder, Citalopram, gabapentin, lorazapam,. Add a strong dose of clindamycin in the hospital for an infection and tremors began. 3 yrs later, Suffering from a severe movement disorder! In the middle of the 3 yr period I slowly began weaning off of each. Gaba was first to go completely, then norco to 1/2 per day, not difficult for me. An injury to my shoulder blade almost the same day weaning off of lorazapam by the new P.A. and we have a firestorm! Everything blended together and took 3 months to figure out why my shoulder was in misery. Body jerking only made it worse. With prayer, I heard, it’s 2 problems, your shoulder and detox! So here i am, needing the best detox for the above mentioned medications. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Our son has used many of your recipes for metal-osis from failed hardware from back surgery. We are grateful for you and your essential information and recipes for whole body health. Many blessings to you, we are so grateful!

I couldn’t be bothered having to clean out the juicer or blender so I macerated the grated ginger and lemon zest in the lemon juice and added one teaspoon of organic apple-cider vinegar. I chopped up everything into a salad and tossed it in the ginger-lemon dressing. It’s become a regular late-evening snack. The fibre is really good for the bowels and it fills the stomach, so you don’t crave a midnight nosh.

It will contain fiber. If that’s what you want, fine. But for THIS particular JUICE, it’s not “juice”. Consuming juice with fiber does other things, and the liver has to work in a different way. With a simple JUICE, it flushes out the toxins.

I do something similar but I add parsley and cilantro. I blend the ingredients in a high speed blender (Vitamix) and drink it. Why throw out all that great fiber! Plus a Vitamix pitcher is a lot easier to clean than a juicer.

When you make a smoothie, you are eating the whole food, which is GREAT of course. But when you juice you can get the liquid nutrition from so much more vegetables than what you’d be able to eat in a smoothie. For instance, in the juice I recommend to my patients most often for liver cleansing, there is an entire bunch of celery, 1/2 bunch dandelion, 1/2 cucumber, 1 green apple, 1 lemon and 1 inch of ginger (in those whose constitutions can take this). You could not eat that much but when juicing you are able to glean the benefits from that much alkalizing nutrition.

This is anecdotal (and tmi if anyone does?’t want to hear it) but my personal experience is having a runny nose leads me to have the pathogens that survive in it spread to the rest of the body, especially when thick it stays put long enough for the pathogens to spread. Power phytochemicals like in pineapples and ginger seem to kill off the germs as well as the mucus it lives and travels in. I take it when I feel a flu coming. I don’t get ill after that. Great for avoiding getting ill in the pandemic those two ingredients and even lemon. Clean ingredients.

    1) can I use canned pineapple?

    • Brit on

      1) I drink many types of canned pineapple and some can make you ill and aren’t worth it. If you get the large can of dole, it’s best. With all of these, fresh is ideal when possible but not always feasible
      2) yes all of it’s edible and you want to eat whole, clean foods

I am very excited about this anti-inflammatory drink. I have read some comments about pineapple and allergies….maybe berries such as blueberries or strawberries can take the place those are both anti-inflammatories too. Just a thought.

    • Melanie on

Hi Marjorie, I hope this finds you well. My dad is about to start taking prednisone every day and I would love to hear from someone who has actually taken it consistently. Can you please email me your email address so I can ask you some questions? Sincerely Melanie

I have made a ” smoothie “, similiar to this juice, for a number of year. .., I use celery, cucumber, ginger, green apple, lime, and the pineapple. It is delicious!! And the most beautiful pale green colour, it kind of looks like a pistachio coloured milkshake! Thank you Dr. Axe !

Hi Dr Axe…. am on keto diet.., not having fruit. I have sore hands, fingers . I think its inflammation / arthritis. Can i have this juice , it contains apple & pineapple. Thanks for your advice.

  71. Bev Horrigan on

My husband n I make these juices every morning and have done so fo 30 years. We are mid 70, s and never get sick and don,t look old, we have smooth skin and a healthy body. We use a cold press juicer as the wizzbang juicer get hot and kill the enzimes….

  72. Penny on

What if you don’t have a juicer & can’t afford one – any worth its salt is expensive. Can you just blend it until its almost like juice even though it will have all the fibrous parts still in it?

Also, how can a person get to where the star ratings already registered can be read? Clicking on a star only registers it as a vote & a click on a low star could mess up the accuracy of the rating system & turn people away from using the recipe. Thank you.

  73. Trevor on

Your star rating system has problems. I clicked it to see if I could see a breakdown of the ratings and it registered it as a vote. I was unable to remove or change the vote. This could explain why the juice recipes have low overall ratings.

Thank you for sharing, my son has cancer and I was looking for things to make to help him to over come it because I will not give up. I think if the food is high in vitamins and proteins will help him to get well . Thank you !

When I lived in Nashville I use to go to Dr. Axe. He is one of the most amazing guys and I love following his career along with his advice on doing stuff more natural. I was able to cut my cholesterol levels in half thanks to him and my normal doctor was blown away. Keep up the great work!

Both my husband and I are using this and it not only works, it works FAST!!! Seeing relief in in about 1/2 a day.

I am also doing your Secret Detox drink. I have found that if I do both of these that my planter Faciatis is taken from a level 5 in pain to about 1.5. So yes, these two work, work fast and work well.

An added bonus is that I had some really bad acne on my face. It cleared up by 75% in two days. Unbelievable. And I am on the Keto diet and couldn’t get rid of it!!!!! Thank you Dr. Axe. You are such a blessing to so many. God richly bless you!

    • brit on

Fats and proteins on the keto diet I bet would be the inflammatory combination for skin. I could imagine the vitamin c and anti inflammatory compounds helping out the skin in clearing it up. My thought is it would increase circulation for detoxing there.

  81. Ron on

Need to rework the main page i was reading. In one paragraph it talks about the anti inflammatory diet and it is highlighted as a link. When you click it, it takes you to the juice recipe not the diet. Should state that the diet info is further down on the main page. Would keep people from wondering why they don’t get the diet info when the click the link.
    Thank you

What are your recommendations for uterine cancer(sarcoma) removal. It was a stage 1. It’s considered rare and aggressive. I want to stay cancer free.

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

      Hi Ronda,

You can find varies articles on cancer from my site you may found helpful here:

I cannot give a proper recommendation without knowing your full medical history and the scope of your condition. I highly recommend you consult a local specialist.

I am wishing you all the best in your health journey. Blessings to you and yours.

I have been on medicines for depression and anxiety for years which don’t seem to work. I have severe bloating in my abdominal area. I live being constipated. When I have some movement it is hard, thin and very sticky. Constantly with headaches and nausea. Fatique and general aches and pains. Recently I started having psuedo seizures. Blood test shows my ANA count indicates possible Lupus. I had Raynauds several yrs. ago after 12 surgeries for MRSA infections. I have also been diagnosed with having a redundant colon. I feel so sick that I believe I will die soon without help. My family is also alarmed at the shape I’m in and talk openly about how poor my countenance is and especially the lack of life in my eyes. I have stopped taking vitamins that I once took daily (15-20)because the bloating is so severe it is difficult to want to swallow anything. I greatly value any advice and will follow any suggestions. Please help!

    • Frances on

      Dear Dani,
I am not a doc, just a fellow human who does not want you to suffer. You deserve much better medical treatment and help that brings actual improvement. You deserve to be vibrantly healthy and happy.
I hope you can find a doc who can give you nutritional IVs. These are NOT the kind one gets in a standard hospital. I am talking about things like IV vitamin C, IV glutathione and such. This puts need nutrients directly into the blood, bypassing the need to digest, but it is very much a rare/”boutique”/ non-insurance ($$) sort of thing. Docs who treated lyme sometimes offer this treatment. God bless (or whatever you believe in.)

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

      Hi Dani,

I am so sorry to hear of your struggles. Without knowing your complete medical history, I cannot give you a proper recommendation. You can, however, find a like-minded practitioner in your area here:

I am wishing you health and happiness! Blessings.

      • susie on

Dr. Axe, you wrote “You can, however, find a like-minded practitioner in your area here:
I’m puzzled because this link appears to be mainly about chiropractic, which I don’t want, and the locations link doesn’t give any info about doctors’ locations, doctors who use your kind of knowledge and treatment. Another poster said the same thing about a different link that did not get to what it was supposed to. Are there some glitches in the links you offer?

In addition to Dr Axe inflammatory can you also consider looking at Mannatech products especially Ambrotose powder form or capsules supplements. Look it up on mannatech websites

      Hi Dani,
I found Dr. Terry Wahls protocol helped a lot of people including me. I have inflammation issues and auto-immune disease and I followed her protocol and I was able to manage my inflammation without pills. I bought the book and followed what she said. She has a podcast as well if you are interested. Here some examples of what you can find online: “What I Eat In A Day: Functional Medicine Doctor Terry Wahls Tells All”, “About The Wahls Protocol | Dr. Terry Wahls, MD & Author” – Just google her and you will find a lot of info about her. This is a game changer for me. Hope it will help you too.

I’m not a doctor but have a health bachelor’s degree. Drinking water helps relieve constipation. I bet if you solve the constipation you wouldn’t need all those vitamins, as that’s too many and could even contribute to it (iron increases it. Look for chelated). After you get better or worse, let us know if you’d like so you can get more helpful info here.

You are amazing. And my new and only doctor! When it comes to dropping the pills and picking the food instead! Bless you! What’s your YouTube? Loved the videos!! Gotta sub!

In the anti inflammatory juice it calls for 1 cup of pineapple,I am allergic to pineapple is there anything I can substitute it with ? And still get the same benefits .

      • Marie on

there are more people then you would think, thats not nice. You dont know any better so its best to look into the reasons someone might be then just starting off sounding not just like a jerk but some one with out knowlege. I realze i am not the smartest. i probably suck at grammer. No one should find faults in one. encourge , be mindful. Im sure your a great person , just think first.

    • Sara on

Yes. You can buy the bromelain supplement at a vitamin store. But be careful imbecause if you’re allergic to pineapple you could be allergic to bromelain. If you try it just be prepared to counter a reaction.

    • Michelle on

Barb, I’m not sure if this helps you, however my son is allergic to apples. We substitute beets for the apples. The juice will be red and that is helpful to get my older kids and husband to drink it.
